The small version would remain as is: a screenshot. The large version would be the same sized screen, but with fun crap around the outside.

or maybe go with a top-down view of a cocktail style arcade game... as below but with the joysticks.

is there a reason the centre is left blank?
what's your bonus going to be in the centre of the map?
all aliens can attack this square, seen as it was their home in the old school game, plus would balance the fact that they get -1?

So basically I am using the same map and adding worthless fluff on the outside. I understand this gets by the new rule but the map is not really any different. I am basically just putting it in a picture frame.

I do understand where you are coming from and I appreciate the help. But...

..The current map is 600 x 600. To make the cocktail style arcade game the large map would need to be bigger than 840x800. I mean I can just add the title and legend to the bottom and left side and make them upside down. I would hit the new rule and the large map would look bad. The playability would be the same and the actual map would be no different.

-The purpose of making a small map is to cater to the lower resolution monitors.
-The purpose of making larger map is to increase the quality of the map and allow players with larger monitors to enjoy a better quality map.

This map does not get better quality if it is larger.

I am just more frustrated with the fact that recent other maps have violated this rule and I am not allowed to as well. Especially since the rule just came into effect after I had already finished the layout.

The rules were changed for one map... this map. The size difference wasn't a rule until 48 hours ago.

And I hear you, Wid... I just thought it was a way around the rule that made the map both bigger and potentially more interesting. I have confidence tha you would make a border work, just as I have confidence that you can successfully increase the size of this map.

The rule change is dumb and the number set is arbitrary - it's as if somebody drew numbers out of a hat and pulled 100. I've never heard of anybody complaining that the five large maps that don't fit the new rule aren't big enough.

OK listen. This is a new rule. I will make sure my "new" maps follow it. I also think there needs to be better definition as to how, why and what the rule is.

But for this map I will:
-Use the small for small. (606x600)
-Use the small for large and add a border with stuff in it. (approx 812x 800)

Does that make everyone happy?

I reckon that's fair...

In the future then this probably shouldn't be done - but for your one example - then I think it's fair...

WM....for this map, i dont think that using the small for large is a good idea, and adding a 100px border each side with stuff in it to get the map up to the 812 mark is being silly. I'm sorry.

And here's why....

I already have Actium in somewhat similar fashion to this where nearly every terit can attack every other terit. As you know, the small map of Actium is very intense on the eyes, and you really have to concentrate on taking everything in.

Your map here, is even more intense on the eyes, because of the colours scheme with so many numbers involved and so many bits of information in the legend.

I would implore you to work up a good version of a large map for this, that allows extra "eye space" for the players.

I know you put a lot into working up two versions, but this may simply need an upsizing on the whole map with the original size army numbers in their place.

This would allow some less intense viewing for some players who simply can't cope with the small version and yet want to play your map on the large version because there is some eye space they can adjust their sights to and can cope with the larger version.

And i'm not necessarily concerned for myself, because this map doesn't interest me, but i may play a game on it just for the experience.

I implore you to give everyone that extra eye space in larger version, PLEASE. :)

Let me put it this way. I will begin working on the large map. I don't know when it will be done and I don't know how big it will be but it will be within the new 9% - 33 % bigger.

Other than the big map, anything else to change. Coleman can still work on the XML and just adjust the coordinates after I am done with the large.

So bonuses, Alien placement and starting neutrals are the areas that need to be talked over.

Sorry for all of the problems everyone on the size thing. It was bound to come up some time so at least it is now over.

What is the best Title Color Combination? (picture page 9)
  • Red/Yellow - 75% - [ 12 ]
  • Orange/Yellow - 0% - [ 0 ]
  • Blue/Orange - 12% - [ 2 ]
  • Blue/Cyan - 12% - [ 2 ]

He means the Arcade cocktail table game idea... like Oaktown posted...

However I think that wouldn't've been allowed as the map would've been the same size in real terms!!

Because of my holiday vacation schedule there is no way the xml will be done before the 26th of this month.

Because of that, we would like more discussion on the features on the map.

Positions of the Ghosts (err Aliens) and the number of neutral territories you think we should have as well as their values would be very helpful.

The large map looks incredibly good. The terrs are sharp and crisp. I really like this map (I was never any good at Pac Man *sigh*) - hopefully, I can be better here.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like you adjusted the legend size - that now looks really cramped/crowded. You have plenty of space (width 125+ pixels and height 100 pixels) to increase that.

I also noticed that your width is 6 pixels over the 600 limit on the small. I guess you could ask for 630, the legend is just slightly crowded there - but not badly, since everything else is in proportion.

I know that it was a lot of work, but the large map look good WM!

I'm really digging the whole concept of this map and it looks like it will be a map that requires the players to use a new strategy compared to the traditional maps.

Excellent work!
