Often times unspoken "alliances" occur because the top players don't want to threaten their lead. If they began to attack each other all 4 players would be equal. If they try to attack the other players they stay stronger.
Unless there is evidence from multiple games to show that this is a repeating pattern I will suspect its due to the above scenario.

I didn't see a single other game they played together, and the unprotected borders just hooked me...
