With 2012 now over, I think it's time to wrap up the Best of 2011 series.
DKs Best of 2011 V - Randomized This is the last in a short series of five tournaments celebrating my favourite maps of 2011. The term "Best of" is highly subjective, of course. I offer no warranty that these maps are the "best" by any measurement other than my personal opinion. The first tournament in this series used No Spoils, the second Flat Rate, the third Nuclear, the fourth Escalating, and this one was set to use Randomized spoils.
I had a thought: if I am randomizing spoils, why not really mix it up and randomize some other settings? This seems to me will make it a real breath of fresh air. Only two settings will not be used in this tournament: team games and freestyle. The round length will not vary from 24 hours and the round limit will not vary from 50. Other than that, you may see:
Standard, Terminator, or Assassin Game Types
Automatic or Manual Deployment
Escalating, Flat Rate, Nuclear or No Spoils
Chained, Adjacent, and Unlimited Forts
Fog or No Fog
Trench or No Trench
Two of the above will be randomized evenly: Escalating, Flat Rate, Nuclear or No Spoils (1/4 chance each) Fog or No Fog (1/2 chance each)
For the other settings, I will randomize with preference to the more popular choices: Standard, Terminator, or Assassin Game Types (1/2 Standard, 1/4 each for the others) Automatic or Manual Deployment (3/4 Automatic) Chained, Adjacent, and Unlimited Forts (1/2 Chained, 1/4 each for the others) Trench or No Trench (3/4 No Trench)
Eligibility: To play in this tournament, you must be premium, have a turns-taken record of 98% or better, at least 100 completed games, and be at least a PFC on sign-up.
Procedure: The format of this tourney will be much like the others in this series, but with some rule tweaks. The first nine phases will consist of multiplayer games. (One change, of course, is that they will not all be Standard.) In each of these phases, only the first player eliminated from each game is eliminated from the tournament. All others will continue to the next phase. As soon as all games in a phase have had one player eliminated, I will begin the next phase with the survivors. Winning these games will not influence the course of the tournament; only that first elimination is significant.
If the game is Assassin, the person Assassinated will count as the elimination, unless:
The game was won by someone assassinating the wrong target, in which case the offender will be the player eliminated, or
Someone deadbeat out before the end, in which case the deadbeat counts as the eliminee.
subrule b trumps subrule a
If the game is Standard or Terminator, the first person out counts as the eliminee.
If any game is won by either Map Victory Conditions (4 of the 9 maps allow Condition Victories) or by Round Limit, and nobody has been killed yet, then the eliminee will be the player with the fewest troops at the end.
The rule used in the previous tournaments about replaying games that are won by Map Victory is superceded and therefore null and void.
In the Final phase, all remaining players will play simultaneously in nine multiplayer Terminator games. Note: Game Type will NOT be randomized in the Final Shootout, but all other settings will be. These games will be completed and winning them will count, as will the number of kills.
The maps to be used are shown in the Phase spoilers below.
Phase 1 40 players in 5 groups will play 8-player games on the Middle Ages map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 2 35 players in 5 groups will play 7-player games on the Transsib 1914 map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 3 30 players in 5 groups will play 6-player games on the Northwest Passage map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 4 25 players in 5 groups will play 5-player games on the Fractured China map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 5 20 players in 4 groups will play 5-player games on the Clandemonium map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 6 16 players in 2 groups will play 8-player games on the Conquer Rome map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 7 14 players in 2 groups will play 7-player games on the Rorke's Drift map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 8 12 players in 2 groups will play 6-player games on the California map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
Phase 9 10 players in 2 groups will play 5-player games on the South Africa 1885 map. The first player eliminated in each game is out of the tournament. The remainder will go on to the next round.
The finals will be different from the first nine phases.
Phase 10: The Final shootout! In the final round, the eight remaining players will face off simultaneously on all nine maps used in the tournament thus far. These games will be Terminator, and players will score 1 point for each kill and two extra points for winning a game. The player who scores the most points in the final phase will win the tournament. Note: Game Type will NOT be randomized in the Final Shootout, but all other settings will be (following the same pattern as in previous rounds.)
In case of a tie, the following tiebreaking rules will be used 1. Total wins in the Final Shootout. 2. Total kills in the Final Shootout. 3. Total wins in the whole tournament. (in that order, obviously.)
