Bible Contradictions!

Postby Truman on Fri Aug 18, 2006 11:51 pm

Welcome welcome! Atheists of all ages: step right up and prove the Bible to be contradictory!

RULES:

The limit is 15 contradictions per post.

Do not post one set and then another right afterward. Wait for a response and then give your next proposition.

Any version of the Bible is permitted to be cited, but you will never hear a quote from any Bible other than the King James Version from Truman.

Do not post any quotes from what "he said" or "she said" (talking about atheistic or anti-Bible quotes) because they will be ignored and past off as just people who do not believe the Bible and have no premise to state such. And when I say this I mean that you can't quote the opinion of people who say that the Bible is "very irrational" and therefore unbelievable since it's too supernatural for them, and they don't have a premise to say such a thing. Otherwise, yes anyone may post another's opinion if that opinion has material to back it up.

Have fun! 8)

All you need to be Christian is believe everything that God has done for you. All the rest is just how a Christian should live life.

I disagree. That is one heck of a leap into athisim, but that is your choice. I'm not going to debate religion, only because everyone is entitled to their own beliefs.

Besides, it is the person that doesn't question ANYTHING that I worry about.

This is a topic for other people to post contradictions, not me. Go google some. Copy-paste some for all I care. Just get some over here for me to have something to do!

I don't normally get involved in religion or politics because the threads tend to get long and nowhere very fast.

However, I can say a few things about the Bible:

1) The Old Testament was passed down word of mouth for a very very long time before it was even written. There are bound to be embellishments and discrepancies contained therein.
2) The oldest COPIES (there are no originals) of the New Testament date to around 100AD. All these copies are different, and most were embellished by the scribes. For example, there is a current debate whether Jesus even said "let he without sin cast the first stone". This was added by scribes later.
3) The council of Nicea (is that right?) chose which books to include in the Old Testament and Torah. The Church (presumably catholic) chose which books to include in the New Testament. The Greek Orthodox version is different than the "Vatican" version as far as I know.
4) Countless texts that did not agree with the Church's view of Christ were banned from the Bible (see history channel "Banned from the Bible" and other type shows and books).

In my life I've had several "Born Again Christians" try to tell me that the Bible is the word of God. Period. IMHO, the Bible is the word of MAN who may or may not have "talked" with God. In the modern era, it is often said that "If you talk to God, you are praying. If God talks to you, you are crazy". So was Moses, Jesus, Muhammed, etc, etc, crazy? Spend 40 years in the desert and I sometimes wonder.

The same is true for the Noble Qu'ran. There were several copies, and after Muhammed's death, his followers settled on one single copy and ordered the rest to be burned. The Catholic Church has done the same, although some texts were discovered in the last 40-50 years or so that conflict with the "established" text of the Bible. Previous to the modern age, they were either destroyed or banned from the Bible.

So this leads me to another question: Was the Bible created by God or by Man through God, or was it created by the Church who already had a set of beliefs and left out, banned or modified anything that contradicted their doctrine?

PS I was babptized a Christian (Protestant). My years of exploration in science, astrophysics and cosmology have eroded my faith that the Bible should be taken verbatim. However, I do believe in some sort of higher power, just for the fact that the Universe did not just "happen". Bring in string and M-Theory, and 10-11 dimensions, it gets a bit more complicated. Some current views are that this universe was created by two M-branes touching.

Whether we humans will be privy to this Higher Power and Understanding after we die, or if we will merely cease to exist is speculation. I have hope in the former, and despair in the latter.

The fact is: we will never know. So we live our lives as best we can with our own set of beliefs. I often wish I could have blind and unquestioning faith in God (and Jesus) as outlined in the Bible, but because of the aforementioned problems and history of the Bible itself, I cannot. I can only have hope and try to live a good life, which no matter how bad it is, is still in my belief a gift and a hidden purpose that maybe someday I will understand.

OK so how many of you fell asleep at my ramblings?

i read the stuff in the quote above, but then it was really boring and i skipped down to the bottom where you asked if i was asleep. To answer your question:

no I did not fall asleep, but it sure was boring.

Did you copy/paste that or take that much time to type all of that out and post it?

Dude, they couldn't decide what to include in another religion's holy books! The Torah is a Jewish document. The Catholic Church can't change their documents.

I typed it. I type fast :-)

And to answer Aladriel, the Old Testament was based on the Torah (please correct me if I am wrong).

I think I type pretty fast...here, let's see how long it takes me.

abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

I think I got just around wcaclimbing. I used a stopwatch so the time could be a bit off- I stopped at 10.41 but I remember looking at my watch after I stopped and it was before the 10.

Anyway, I don't believe the Bible is completely accurate, reason being how inaccurate stories passed via word of mouth are. Some people (myself included) are known to commonly exaggerate things, therefore making parts of stories false. Don't ask me for specific examples, because there are no Bibles in my house. Believe you me, I know plenty about the religion...I spent 8 years in Catholic school, which pretty must just scared me away from the religion and everything about it.
