Obviously there are different opinions of the eventual outcome. I think some Ukrainians think that Russia, even if they fail in this war, will try again. The determination of the Ukrainian people has shattered Russian overconfidence in its military. Putin and Russia's brutal tactics of attacking civilians, hospitals, schools, and inflicting massive civilian casualties and destroying many buildings and infrastructure has not won the war to date. Donations of weapons from the West, mostly by the USA, is a KEY factor, along with the will and determination of the Ukrainian people.
Duk is correct in that many of the Eastern regions were already in the hands of Pro-Russian persons already living there. The same happened years ago in Crimea; Russia, I think under the Tsars, moved many ethnic Russians into the region to gain a foothold and support for Russian occupation.
One of the most significant images at the start of the war was that of many women gathering to make bandages for the future wounds of its soldiers, husbands, brothers, fathers, and sons. Those men who are not fighters, such as musicians and artists, gave of their other skills and talents, such as in logistics, to help the war effort. That show of determination by many and most Ukrainians to resist the Russian invasion was and still is impressive.
It is obvious that Ukraine has resources that Russia craves, Crimea and its warm weather and beaches and ports is one; Ukraine is famous for its fields of grain to feed many peoples. This reminds me of sorts of Southern Italy, with similar resources, but not very wealthy compared to surrounding regions.
President Zalenskyy, with his TV background, is the RIGHT man to be President and Leader of Ukraine. His public persona and statements have encouraged the West, mostly the USA, to invest HUGE amounts of money and war materiel into Ukraine. He has inspired his people and allows the Military Leaders to lead without much interference. In times of conflict, crises and threats, weapons makers do well; OBVIOUSLY. His wife is also a good spokesperson for Ukraine; both are telegenic and project a good image for their nation. His refusal to leave Ukraine at the start of the war was ALSO the RIGHT move and gained respect of the West. He is in this to defend Ukraine and NOT to get personally rich from this conflict. He is obviously risking life, fortune, and sacred honor.
The comparison to Greece by Duk is fitting; I hope the outcome is different.
