actually, yes, i would rather go to a restaurant with a one page menu than a ten page menu. i would rather go to best buy for my electronics, and giant eagle for my groceries rather than wal mart for both.

see, my feeling is that the restaurant with only 10 items on the menu specialize in those 10 items. i guarantee the food is fresher, and the chefs know exactly how to make those 10 items better than the other restaurant that has 100 items.

pretty much, half the maps on this site suck dick. they are poorly done, and dont represent the site as they should.

but who i am i? i dont know, maybe someone who has seen this site go from a lot of players to fewer players. i remember when there were 100 maps, and there were a lot more players.

What if the menu just had one page of teeny tiny pictures of their dishes, sorted alphabetically by where it came from? And if you wanted to know what was in it, they just handed you a larger picture of the dish. And then they stopped serving your favorite dish, just because some other people didn't like it. Would you go to that restaurant?

And if Best Buy and Giant Eagle sold only the 10 most popular products, would you shop there, or at Walmart?

This is not a restaurant - the maps you like don't get better or worse just because there are other maps available. Nobody leaves just because a crappy new map is added. But if the interface is so poorly designed that they can't find what they want, or they get bored with the current choices, then they'll leave. Every map has people that want to play it, so if you remove any of them, it will only make more people leave. If they improved the map browser, it would not matter how many maps they have.

Why are you so angry? Is it because you blurted out a 5-syllable word in an attempt to sound educated without having a clue what it means and are upset others picked up on it, or because between you and your 2 teammates you've played almost 20k games yet were outplayed by someone who's played less than 250 (dice being the only reason it wasn't over a few rounds ago)? If it's the latter, at least it makes the accusation slightly less arbitrary (though no less childish).

First and foremost, xenophobic has four syllables, not five. I'm glad your numeracy skills are on point. What were you saying about defending oneself and being childish again? I do believe personal attacks are much more childish than asking a couple of questions. Perhaps take the plank out of your eye.

Secondly, you are obviously referring to Game 16202665 where you have not won, nor are you winning. Don't get cocky too quickly, ey newbie. I'll allow you to believe dice are the reason you haven't won and are - of course - not the reason you even got close to making a kill in the first place. The fact you would even attempt to use one game as base for an argument is laughable. Get back to me when you've reached even a fraction of what I've achieved here and maybe you'll say something of worth. For the record, I noticed you before your team even joined our game.

Finally, it is astoundingly obvious this is not your first account based on your speed freestyle games. I used to play them almost exclusively and I, as well as anyone else with the knowledge, knows you don't pick them up so quickly. Everyone lies, but doing it so blatantly is saddening. You also just "confessed", according to your own words.

If there's maps you don't like, don't play them. You're not harmed in any way by maps in the list that you don't like. For every map there is someone out there who loves it. Why do you want to take it away from them?

That's the whole point of variety -- something for everybody.

If you go to a fansite for something like Sid Meier's civilization, you will find hundreds, possibly thousands, of custom maps. Some will suck, for sure, but again, you only have to play the ones you like. Same for any other major war game. Plus, most war games have a "random map" generator, so you can literally play a different map every single time, and that helps keep people from getting bored. CC doesn't have anything like that, so we need a much larger number of fixed maps so you don't get bored playing them.

At the very least, I would expect to have maps of every country on earth, plus every significant historical battlefield. Something on the the order of 5,000 maps to choose from would not be inappropriate.

Thanks.

So even the least used maps are getting 50-60 games per month. I'd say at that volume a map is worth keeping. Sure it is a niche interest but they are being used.

Doesn't really matter which ones you think are shitty though. Whatever it is, somebody out there likes it, and whatever ones you like, somebody else hates. Do you somehow think that just removing certain maps will increase membership? Amazon has a ton of shitty (in my opinion) products for sale, but that doesn't stop them from being successful. The difference is that they have a good user interface, so people don't have to wade through tons of garbage to find what they want.

ronc8649 wrote:newbies jump on and find themselves playing them, and getting worked over, and leaving.

Do you have some evidence for this statement? I've heard that newbies see a different interface with fewer choices, but I don't know what it looks like. If there is still a problem, then they should fix the experience for new users. But the solution is not to remove maps that experienced members want to play.

ronc8649 wrote:there should be beginner maps, intermediate maps, and expert level maps.

Fine. And people should be able to sort and filter the maps by difficulty, popularity, size, theme, XML features used, suitability for particular game settings, etc.

ronc8649 wrote:and less maps. ffs.

No. For a lot of people, new content is what keeps them interested and coming back to a website. They should also add more XML features so people can develop new maps with new forms of gameplay. If you don't like them, then don't play them.

But before they do that, they need to fix the map browser interface.

I don't know anything about the finances of the site, but the priority around here does not appear to be improving the interfaces. The last interface change I saw, the game finder update, was a complete disaster as far as I'm concerned.

ronc8649 wrote:last time i checked you had to pay for things on amazon, they didnt just let you freeload like you do here...

The amazon comparison was about the interface, not the business model. If amazon had an interface like CC, where they presented an alphabetical list of everything they had, without any sorting or filtering capabilities, and you had to click on each item to have any idea what it was, then no one would use their service either.

ronc8649 wrote:you come into this thread about how to make it better not looking at the decline that has been happening ever since all these new maps were created. let me guess, you also dont believe in global warming. see how fucking stupid that reference is. its like comparing cc to amazon.

And you think that removing maps is somehow going to be the solution to the decline? You never answered my question about which maps you would remove.
I have no idea why you're bringing up global warming, or why you think it somehow relates to comparing the cc interface to that of amazon.
Amazon has maps. If you're looking for one, you can filter and sort your results in numerous ways. If CC could do something even close to this it would be a huge improvement for both new and existing players.

ronc8649 wrote:ffs man, pay 30 dollars, and quit freeloading.

I was a paying member in the past. But I'm not going to financially support a site if I don't like the general direction that it's headed. Apparently, I'm not the only one who feels this way. Still, freeloaders are better for the site than ex-members. At least we can still help to fill games.

So to sum up the situation as I see it:
  • The site has too many maps for the current map browser interface to handle effectively.
  • Removing any maps will upset the people who like those maps, and accelerate the decline. It will do very little to improve the site's appeal to new players.
  • Adding more maps only makes the current interface more unwieldy, but at this point I think the effect is negligible, and is offset by the interest some people have in new maps.
  • Leaving the number of maps exactly as it is now (and has been for the past 1 1/2 years) leaves the site with an unappealing experience for new players, and would continue the slow stagnation and decline that has been going on for years.
  • The only thing that will help in all areas is to improve the map browser interface.

Strongly agree with this.

Furthermore, if the maps were categorised like that, the random map option could be extended to random map, random beginner map, random intermediate map and random expert map. I can imagine many players avoiding random out of fear of receiving a map that does not reflect their skill level.
A noob having to play one of the rail maps for example (confused the hell out of me when 'forced' to play a fog speed game on one), or a CC genius like Mr I'veachievedloads having to play a map beneath him and usually decided by luck like doodle earth.

Maybe call them simple/medium/complex instead, but that's a different discussion and a small issue.

I'm so sorry owenshooter, I should know you are always right. Yes too many maps on here, please people do not contribute to this site by making more, it would be such sorrow. Im glad there is no such thing as an opinion, only facts which your pretty little mouth spews out. So sorry :( Please forgive me for not being so intelligent as you.

ok.. now that the child has been put to bed (dildo, looking at you), let me post again... yes, there are maps that are horrible pieces of shit on this site. yes, there are maps that are pretty much FARM-TASTIC maps. yes, people get on this site and are overwhelmed with the play options, maps, etc... for those of you that say, "prove it," we have had a handful of OLD USERS that returned to the site, whom were overwhelmed by it all. i am sure that most of us know more than a few players that this has happened with (i know a very large number that have returned and left, due to this reason).

so, as has been said 200 or more times in this thread. SORT THE MAPS BASED ON COMPLEXITY OF PLAY!!! only unlock certain maps after you hit X amount of games. i like the additional thought of being able to make that choice on RANDOM also, but i really feel that is part of the fun of it (playing a map you would NEVER play and having to figure it out. it keeps me on the site). as far as all the different game play options, they have just ruined the site. FOG/TRENCH/SHITTY MAP is what CC should change it's name too. i have always thought that fog was the worst implementation on this site. how did you do this on the board game? nobody has been able to tell me this, yet! Trench is even more moronic, just play chained, you have to plan your movement of troops or you are screwed.

overall, the glut of maps, disarray of the maps, the abundance of game settings, they all need to be resolved. all of it. and while you are at it, how about changing the freestyle rules back to what they were. i still do not know how CC changed those rules and watched 10's of thousands of users leave the site, without trying to correct it. un. be. lieve. able.

the black jagermeister makes some good points here. 100% agree with the map sorting and the reverting back to the "old" freestyle rules - whatever those may be(don't play freestyle, so no clue what they are/were). why bigwhup continues to deny the freestyle demographic their propers is beyond my feeble llama brain. that being said, you can't deny the trenchers their propers, either. just because you don't like those settings doesn't mean other people don't. I personally love trench, in fact, I have to make a point of playing standard/reg. or whatever name you wish to call it, just so I don't forget how - because I love playing trench that much. I know a few folks on here that pretty much only play trench. so, getting rid of it would make them sad, then very angry. fog has also earned it's place as a valued setting, as well, imo...

Variety is the spice of life.

What would you rather have? Too few maps or too many maps, with more coming out?
