You came up with the idea, so I think you should ask you yourself how does it feel to kill an imaginary person?BigBallinStalin wrote:How does it feel, to kill an imaginary person?Nola_Lifer wrote:Baby seals die all the time, people die all the time. lol
it's a thought experiment
i don't understand how someone can think they didn't kill a person, when they willingly and knowingly took an action that ended a human life. only consequences matter; the agent is irrelevant.

So, you're saying the life of a seal and human are roughly equal in your opinion, and in regards to this scenario?narthuro wrote:Zero.
I couldn't consciously, willingly kill another thing, even if I was saving another life in the process. I would be disturbing the natural order of things. I'm not saying the man had it coming to him, but I would want the same result to be as if I wasn't there. It would be easier for me to wash my hands clean from someone I could have saved but didn't, than to live with the fact that I took a life in my hands and ended it, when it didn't deserve to end. The same holds true if it were a seal.
I know this is irrational, but it's just how I feel. Feel free to shoot holes in it.
How far down does this equality go rats? bugs?

yes, if you mean that "not pressing BBS' button" is an action.Haggis_McMutton wrote:Is taking an action = not taking any action?john9blue wrote:lol

it was a deliberate act of free will to not press BBS' button (much like it's a deliberate act of free will to assert that god doesn't exist, but that's another thread lol)

There's maybe 50 people in the world that I value highly enough that I would kill to save them. As for the rest, who gives a rat's ass? People are more common than lemmings, whereas seals are not.

Speaking of the poll, I love how this seems to be an "all or nothing" issue.

"ehh, i'd say a human is worth about 20 BBS (beautiful baby seals)"
"why 20?"
"i dunno lol"
i didn't answer the poll though, because i think it depends on the person/seals in question

1000's of seal die every year to keep some humans alive.

but i think it's time we clubbed some humans and keep more seals alive

Re: How many...
That's an easy question. The real one that faces us is however, how many baby humans would you let die, to have more things?
That question however, is rhetorical. The answer is already known, and its a resounding; quite a few.

Re: How many...
This is absolutely true, and possibly the reason for much of the suffering we do allow. Imagine if we actually did consider all humans in the world of the same value. Imagine the world believed a God created each human for a real purpose and it was our job to make that world better for all of them, despite their location, their color, their religion. Its a true shame we have precious few such believers.john9blue wrote:depends.
there are some humans that i wouldn't kill a single baby seal to save because they are better off dead
not all organisms of the same species have the same value.
I do agree however, that many humans, have made choices and done things to not warrant the death of a seal, let alone a baby seal or a baby cricket for that matter die.
There is one thing that is obvious when you work with animals, have pets, or even just observe animals, and that underlying factor, is that every single last one of them wants to live, and most will put every last energy into doing whatever it takes to live. We as humans have a body that is capable of much greater understanding of life and death than many animals, but for the most part, our desire to live is just as programmed and no more, or no less then theirs. Every single creature just doesn't want to feel pain or die.
If one cannot have empathy for a fellow creature, how can one fully expect to have empathy for another person?

6 billion humans, less than 1 billion seals?BigBallinStalin wrote:So why are some people in here refusing to kill at least one baby seal in order to save one human being?
Also the phrasing of your question might be a factor.
If you asked if you would kill a baby seal to feed a starving person, you might see more people voting for that.

I'm not saying we gotta save all the humans. We're only talking one human here. (granted, I should've made that clearer earlier, but it's too late).Baron Von PWN wrote:6 billion humans, less than 1 billion seals?BigBallinStalin wrote:So why are some people in here refusing to kill at least one baby seal in order to save one human being?

Here's a better one: you and your family are starving. You bump into BvP who seems very plump and healthy. Do you kill one BVP in order to save you and your family?
