Andy,

Thanks for the comprehensive comments. I made almost all the changes you suggested so I've only quoted/replied to the execptions below.

AndyDufresne wrote:Well, it looks like there is less and less I can find questionable about gameplay. A quick overview...I could consider giving the Far East a bonus of 3 instead of 4....perhaps bumping both USA and Canada up each one...but those are the only few ideas that popped up gameplay wise.

Andy could do the middle east without much difficulty as I recall it was on the borderline of being four. I'll recheck my calculations tomorrow but will likely bump it as you suggest. On USA and Canada, if I bump them both I would need to raise North America to 12 (otherwise holding the 'whole' wouldn't yield any extra units though it would have fewer borders)... Thoughts?

AndyDufresne wrote:--Also...is part of Alaska missing on the right hand of the map, near Russia?

Yep, I chopped the Aleutian Islands that are Alaska's tail to save spacep

AndyDufresne wrote:o Paraguay--I'm not sure how this would look, but consider making the 'guay' part of the name black in the ocean...or somehow making the whole name clear.

Tried all black, zebra, and putting the name in the Ocean with a line. The orginal white moved slightly is the least worst.

AndyDufresne wrote:Regarding the SMALL MAP, if you can...attempt to have the things you'd like to change from the above list...in it also.

What hinders the small map the most, has to be the size of the country names. If at all possible, look into tweaking their size to slightly larger or bolder.

Andy, I tried bold but at this size it isn't clearer, I also tried bumping up a half point size but not all the names fit. I could make some names larger leaving some the current size but I think it would be only marginally clearer and definately uglier. Do you think it's worth doing?

Quick look again...
  • Germany--Perhaps a Zebra would work better with the name?
  • Turkey--Maybe fiddling with the name position a little more
  • Korea--Can you just move the name further north, into china sort of? I think it would still be clear that it is representing the korean area.
  • Poland--Perhaps a black 'd' in the name
  • Turkmenistan--Perhaps 'Turk' black...zebra?
  • Asia Nons--Perhaps a slightly darker shade, just to differentiate between the ocean (and the seas) and the countries.

Bit hard to see Tierre del Fuego

is there any reason the Zim in Zimbabwe is italicised or is that to signify that you made this map (i dont see your name anywhere else on the map)

Just to be really picky, the line between Iraq and Iran is quite thick, the northern Ireland of the british Isles looks off colour and the line from British Isles to Iceland seems to go into the actual Iceland.

Uve probably discussed this in the 21 pages of suggestions for this map, but is there not any way to get rid of the lines from the name to the country?

I'd like to request that you change the name of "New South Wales" to "Eastern Australia"

As a Victorian, it's highly insulting! 8)

Edit: Apart form that, i think your map is awesome.

I have to agree. There's three states within that country, naming it after one is an insult to the others, especially with the rivalry between each of them.

Your map is great though, can't wait to play it. My only problem is that some of the names are hard to read. In particular the two in Asia that both end in "nistan". It could be left how is though, it's easy enough to figure out if you look hard enough.

My main suggestion right now simply has to do with the map size. The height of the map right now means that most people are going to have to scroll down every time it refreshes. I think you can fix that for some people (or at least reduce the scrolling) by moving Antarctica up and to the right. I know it wouldn't be as accurate geographically, but it would cut down on the large gap of ocean that currently exists (similar to how you reduced the atlantic to almost nothing).

If need be, I think it would be worthwhile to remove Tierra del Fuego to move antarctica up. If you did that, and moved anarctica to the right as well, you could cut the map height by 10% (and antarctica would fit rather nicely right below Africa and somewhat between SA and Australia, even if its not accurate).

Also, aesthetically you still have boring vertical borders in Antarctica and Australia. Is there a reason for that? Obviously its not important for game play but I think it takes away some of the appeal of your map.

The borders in Australia are accurate. They take into consideration existing state and territor borders, so I think at least the Aussie ones should stay where they are.

leave the vertical borders, they look nice and they are accurate.
-i think the colour of the "nons" in europe is still a little bright, perhaps add a lil more grey to the mix?
-its difficult to see the grey borders in scandinavia, is it possible to make the green a little darker?
-this is nitpicky, but can the name "morocco" be moved a little closer to africa?
-and just b careful of matching the colours in the actual map to their colourkey boxes and the subcontinent minimap.

and sully- if he moves antartica it makes the british claim a useless territory. it also seems more crowded.

it looks beautiful zim.

The British and Argentine claims are currently connected to the same country. You could do the exact same thing after moving the map.

I know it makes it more crowded, but if it saves scrolling I think it would make game play much more enjoyable.

Updated to capture the recent feedback on New South Wales (renamed to Vegemiteland), colours, names, etc. Let me know what you think of the zebra text for Bolivia, Poland, etc. I thought I would hate it but it's growing on me.

Also tried to shrink the map vertically as per Sully's request as I agree if we can minimize scrolling it would increase playability. In order to do this I took some pixels off the top which make Greenland a little less accurate but I don't think is an issue. I also moved Antarctica up and chopped the Shetland's off of the British claim to get some sea room. I think it achieves the shortening without doing to much damage to accuracy.

Cheers,

Zim

very nive map, can't wait to paly it,

I'd suggest, for the ppl complaining about lower canada, moving the label for new england below its army shadow, and moving the lower canada label into the atlantic, right between those two islands (forgive my comeplete ignorance of Canadian geography)

dont' go crazy with the labels, people should ahve a general idea about the geography of the world and be able to infer where certain labels go

heads up- ur southern africa and east indies shifted in ur minimap. and ur gonna hate me, but the colours in western europe and scandinavia still dont seem match the minimap... :| *sweet smile to avoid getting mutilated*

i think the zebra works- took a lil getting used too.

Zim, really, don't cut off the top like that I'd rather deal with the scrolling. Same thing with Sully's version. It's not worth it. Better off with a sexy map and some scrolling than neither. Seriously.

Used the eye-dropper to redo the mini-map and legend colours. If they don't match now it's either a bug in Illustrator or something funky with the colour space on my machine (or yours) or most likely some kind of brain cramp on my part.

I'm just wondering, do you think that you should put the shade on the overwater borders just a shade or two darker, I think it might make it a little easier on the eyes.

As long as were on aesthetics, I was wondering if the semi-circle around Taiwan -- which I thought was just a mistake for a long time -- could be removed. I notice Sri Lanka is about the same size as Taiwan and is part of the Indian Subcontinent yet there's nothing around it. Would it be possible to distort Taiwan's size to that of Sri Lanka's and remove the circle?

Also, can the country Saudi's name be extended to Saudi-Arabia? Saudi just seems lonely by itself without Arabia and space doesn't seem too unworkable. No?

And finally, may I suggest that the Nons around China(Turkmenistan, The Indies, Et Cetera) be a little less, well, dreary? I understand their being sad at not providing a bonus, but they look like ghosts. None of the other Nons are that light. Maybe a bit more color?

Just out of curiosity when will this map be released? I'm itching with anticipation!!

Jargo...when it's time. I'm glad I sparked some more interest in this map with my last few posts Zim!

My take on a few of the new posts along with some new ideas...

---Keep it tall, I don't mind a little scrolling.

---Could you change 'Western Australia' to simply 'West Australia' and Eastern part to 'East Australia'... I think it would help fit all those names in the appropriate areas.

---Are 'Upper Canada' and 'Lower Canada' in a different font, or slightly bigger, or is it just my eyes?

---I think all the Zebra names you have work pretty well now...Bolivia is a little hard to get use to, but it is the only one that still roughs me.

---And I agree with a little splash of more color for the Asia 'Nons' perhaps.

Anyways...this map is surely coming along nicely, and I'm glad to see more interest in this map. Soon we can get it into Final Forge :)

Looking good. I think Western Australia should remain as is, but as an Aussie I have no problem with the other two being shortened. :P
