What's your least favorite peice of literature?
I think mine would be The Great Gatsby. I read it recently for my english class. It might be one of the classics, but I just don't see what's so great about it. For the most part, it's pretty much just some guy talking about what he did over the weekend. The only two somewhat exciting events in the book were when Mrs. Wilson got hit by the car, and when Gatsby got killed. Other that that, I just wasn't able to enjoy it.

Anything by the interminably dreary Thomas Hardy.
No, wait, there was something we were forced to read back when i was at school - Dr Johnson'r Rasselass, Prince of Abysinnia. I have never met anybody that wasn't at school with me who's heard of it, let alone read it - and there's an effin good reason for that.

In 6th grade we had to read Belle Pratter's Boy, it sucked. That is the least favorite book I have ever read.
Re: What's your least favorite peice of literature?
without a doubt the bible. I had to read it in catholic gradeschool, then some more in Jesuit highschool, and also lots during church. I found the entire religion and faith to be so hypocritical that I was pushed away.

Having to read some of these things in high school is, ironically, what often ruins them. You would not pick up a Quantum physics text without knowing some basics first, but teachers somehow assume kids are supposed to go with ease from Sponge Bob to Charles Dickensen.

I agree. The analyzation of various works often takes all the enjoyment out of reading them. It's kind of hard to enjoy a book when you have a five page essay about it due at the end of the week.PLAYER57832 wrote:Having to read some of these things in high school is, ironically, what often ruins them. Tried reading Swallows and Amazons a few months back. Gave up when still nothing had bloody happened after chapter 5 or so.

Re: What's your least favorite peice of literature?
Yes very much so. While there were no actual required books to read in my literature class, the teacher was pretty obvious about us needing to read some books ("I'll glare at you and fail you if you don't put this book on your list."). Because of that (and a number of other factors) I have come to loathe dutch literature.PLAYER57832 wrote:Having to read some of these things in high school is, ironically, what often ruins them. The books weren't intended for such a young audience or forcibly read.
I mean, the books I've enjoyed reading were always the books I wasn't forced to either read or like. (Like is pretty important, if your teacher tells you that this book is one of the best works ever you instantly start to think it's shit.)

Wanna hear something funny?
Up until just now, I had missed the word "least" in the thread title. Twilight was supposed to be a sarcastic response.
Go team Tim!

The most overrated is surely The brothers Karamazov by Dostoyevsky.
Einstein and Freud thought it was one of the best novels ever. Many critics say it´s his best.
I must have read fifteen other novels by Fyodor but none of them are as boring as that one.
maybe not my least favourite but definitely the biggest disappointment

I agree - Hardy was a boring bastard and I'm from Wessex ffs. I know what you mean about having to read books at school ruining them, but we had to read Lord of the Flies and that was/is awesome...

That's because it is really for that age group. Too many others are not. And, while teenagers are certainly approaching adulthood or adults in many respects, they lack the perspective of many experiences. It does not mean teenagers are dumb or incapable, but its sort of like reading a book on "how to have a good time in retirement" or some such when you are 30.xelabale wrote:I agree - Hardy was a boring bastard and I'm from Wessex ffs. i would hold out hope that someday you will grow up, learn to love good stories when you can read them outside of all that high school "spot-the-symbolism" bullshit... but somehow i think you'll still be jerking off to cartoon dogs when you're 30, complaining about how much reading you have to do for your job at the autozone

"All Quiet on the Western Front" was such a let down. Also "The Red Badge of Courage," and "Johnny Got his Gun." However, "Johnny Got his Gun" was good for the last two chapters.

Sister Alice. Not only was it hard to read through, but it also "ends" in one of those time loops and has tendency to make one go "What the Hell!?"
"Eh, whatever."

I don't have a book to add, since I'm pretty much a fan of any books (although I don't know what all the fuss is about Dan Brown and Harry Potter).
