get rid of the 3 quote rule [done - upped to 5]

Post by cena-rules »

REPLACE QUOTE THING

Concise description:
  • replace the current you may only embed 3 quotes within each other thing with a higher limit (5 or 6)
Specifics:
  • the mafia community are fed up with the 3 quotes thing so we feel it should either go back to the old system or the limit should be raised
This will improve the following aspects of the site:
  • you wont face a revolt from the mafia community
    we will all be happier
EDIT 5 DAY POLL UP

put up a poll.

I think the limit should be extended to 5. Its difficult to do many things with only 3 quotes.

Look how many quotes you can fit in a post...in a variety of ways! You can still easily structure quote filled posts like:
1
2
3
4
5
6
7

I think it would be great if the limit was increased.

I'm not sure but is the quote limit used to prevent "quote spam" (like two people continuously quoting each other in a topic in Chatter Box)?

Yes. Just like limiting smileys to 40 per post. People are allowed what a reasonable poster would need. Unreasonable posters want more so they can post obnoxious noise.

While I see Andy's point about fitting in lots of quotes; it is a bit of a fag-about to have to chop and change quote chains into a new and contrived arrangement to make them all appear in your post. Don't get me wrong, quote-chain spam annoys the hell out of me and a limit is required; but three seems miserish.

Five would be a far more sensible limit, it would be of great benefit to those who play mafia (and other forum games), to those who engage in debates in the Clubhouse, for those quoting cheating admissions in C&A, and for those of us who like to indulge in snappy one-liner battles.

In summary: While contrived structures can be used to fit in a lot of quotes, forcing such a practice is annoying and time-consuming for users. A quote-limit is needed to stop chain-spam, but the current limit is overly-restrictive and unecessarily low. A far more sensible and reasonable middle-ground would be 5.

As such, I ask the moderating community to raise the number of chained quotes permitted, if only for a trial period to assess its impact on the readability of forum dialogue.

Let's not be unreasonable now; what harm could there possibly be in permitting a short trial of this suggestion? Let's give it a whirl and see how it works out.

To add one more voice to what seems to be a developing concensus ....

Up the limit to at least 5 ... perhaps more.

I have learned to work around it some, but it is akward. Also, I am not sure at all what is to be gained from this limit. It does not seem to really reduce post lengths ... may in some cases make them longer or even force people to break up their answers into multiple posts.

There is a way around having a quote limit, i.e. no quote limit. Just have the original quote shown and if people want to see another quote embedded they click a button that enlarges the post, hey presto! no quote chains unless you want to see them!

Yes, exactly! I like the quote limit, but i just want to press "Quote" and respond without having to change things around.

I do know a site that does that but I can't remember which one, so if anyone else can be bothered to look... Well it's doable anyway

I still think that a small raise of the quote-chain maximum will leave most reasonable users satisfied, while also being by far the simplest solution to implement. Let's get that done before we start troubling ourselves with whizzy techno-fixes that probably reqiure patching or modding the forums.

The limit probably will not be abolished, as it cuts down on spam. It may, however, have a chance to be raised slightly. ;)

Given an 85% vote in favour of abolishing it, that seems like a remarkably autocratic stance to take. Has there ever been a poll in which relevant users have been so unanimously in favour of a measure before?

Given that a very 'vocal minority' (whom this time we're apparently catering to) seem to think that keeping the quote limit is a very serious matter, is there a way to sort this out a little more subtly?
What I'm getting at is that this whizzy new forum interface might be able to support different quote limits on different forums; allowing us to switch off the limit in social-lounge, raise it slightly in all the other forums, and keep it at three in C&A and GD.

Is such a solution possible, especially in the light of the overwhelming number of users who seem to disagree with the administrator's personal preferences?
