Holding Asia
In the Classic map, has anyone held Asia during the middle of a game? i.e. when the other players are obviously not dead yet?
Im that little guy that you think can't do nuthin, and then out no where KAPOW!
This kinda stuff always happens to me...

Re: Holding Asia
never, in the time it takes to secure asia your opponents will have had the opportunity to secure a smaller bonus and use that against you.
Re: Holding Asia
Are you that confident about that? across all games in CC forever?greenoaks wrote:never, in the time it takes to secure asia your opponents will have had the opportunity to secure a smaller bonus and use that against you.

Re: Holding Asia
hes right... australia borders right onto asia
Re: Holding Asia
Don't be, I've done it ^^greenoaks wrote:yes
Once, only, to be sure, but I have done it. Never with players I would call good, by my standards, but still, it has been done.
I've done it several times in a foggy game, where the players just ignored the massive amounts of question marks in asia, figuring it was still spread out among other players. If you get a nice drop in asia, other players usually won't expect you to go for it.

Re: Holding Asia
I'm in a no-cards game approaching it's two-month anniversary... it was the first game I ever joined, incedentally. Because Fog of War hid my actions, I managed to slowly build up a force that took asia, which I managed to hold for one turn. This one turn gave me enough force to eliminate a captain who was hiding out in Australia, which I managed to hold even as one territory in Asia was conquered by another player. I've held Asia for the rest of the game, on and off; while I can't keep it consistently, the number of territories I hold, along with Australia, gives me a bonus equal to everyone else, who each hold smaller continents, and the one turn in three I manage to hold the Asia bonus gives me a distinct advantage. I've started to expand into N. America, which is the one continent not held completely by anyone.
So yes, it is very possible to hold Asia, just very rarely is it worth doing. I'm trying to defend 4 border territories, and the fact that I am based there makes me a more prominent target than anyone else.

Re: Holding Asia
if you hold aussie you can grow out to slowly take asia =p
normally all territs except one, but I assume if the other players arent playing very well chances are bigger ^^

Re: Holding Asia
actually, myself and another player recently won a doubled game in which he quickly grabbed australia and then started dropping and forting me like crazy. i think we had it by round 4, and the game was over quickly after. it as a fog of war game though, so noone knew what was going on to coordinate a stop

Re: Holding Asia
i don´t play fog, but i guess in a no card or flat rate game with fog it could be possible to go for Asia because nobody will expect this.

Re: Holding Asia
Midgame I think it's only possible in standard games if you're using FoW and are sneaky about it. Otherwise someone will break you as soon as you hold it. Teamgames are obviously different, as was pointed out.

I've done it once (Game 2281516). I got an amazing drop in Asia; I'm talking Ural, Mongolia, Yakutsk, Irkutsk and Siberia. I was surrounded by bickering opponents so was largely left alone until I was able to take Aus and move out from there. Check the game log for a better picture.

Re: Holding Asia
getting asia is easy in speed games if you own alot of the terts and there arn't many other armies are in there.
Just play your move last second and take asia swiftly. It sounds easy but it's bloody hard

Re: Holding Asia
I too think that your best chance for Asia is in Oceania. It's not as though you're typically going to take it from Europe which is hardly any easier to hold as a first continent. But taking it as your first continent and holding it is only possible with fog of war or against truly incompetent or epically unlucky opponents. Even as your second continent in a game of more than three it is often a bridge too far because of the tendency for mobs of erstwhile distracted enemies to band together and thump you.

Re: Holding Asia
ive done it once or twice in 1v1 matches... when i get a drop in which 3/4 of my units are dropped in asia -_-'' annoying drop when its not unlimited forts, but with only 4 contries needing to be taken, and 3 of them your opponent its an easy grab lol, but i wouldnt recomment it as a strat
Re: Holding Asia
Would be certainly possible in freestyle speed games, you just ened to drop and the dice, doesn't matter how many border armies you have if you're quick enough...
24 hour games certainly you would need FOW and bickering opponents

Re: Holding Asia
i did it once (somehow) in a 4 player, unfoggy, flat rate game. i had a pretty good drop in aussie and then simply expanded.
however i probably wouldn't have done so if I hadn't had an alliance with the other player.
Nonetheless, it is VERY hard to defend. i had been holding it at the end of my turn for a couple of rounds, but didn't actually get the bonus until late in the game

Re: Holding Asia
I haven't played enough games here to know, but in real-life Risk games, I've definitely seen Asia held before. But rarely. Like, once.

Re: Holding Asia
Asia isn't really all that hard to hold if you have Assie and Ukraine. Then you only have THREE borders! Kamatchka, Ukraine, and Middle east!
Also, it's fun to snipe Asia in the last 2 seconds of a Freestyle round

Re: Holding Asia
Like I said, I held it before Oceania before, and took Oceania from another player afterwards. But I think what I had to my advantage was both fog of war, and no-cards. no-cards meant less armies, so it was easier to hold once I had my borders down to a few.
Re: Holding Asia
I haven't but thats because I do not want to, it would take too many armies to allow me to continue to hold it.
I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.
Re: Holding Asia
Well, i have seen it done..
but they were also holding Australia, and slowly creep up on asia.
thats the best strategy i know of.
