Biggest tournament ever.

Post by White Moose »

I've seen quite a lot of tournaments out there, but not many that have a VERY VERY large amount of players. The one with the most players ive seen so far is Amazzony's Olympics game with 350 players.
But how many has it been in the largest tournament there have ever been here on Conquerclub??

I've thought about doing an very large tournament accually. 512 players, 4 groups and 128 in each group.
But if i would do this alone, then it would take to much time. So it would be best if i had 3 people to help me. Each one of us 4 will take care of one group.

Havent given it much thought on how many games that will be player or so.
but something like this: Starts of with a 4 player game (on classic perhaps), then we have 32 players in each group left. Those 32 play yet another 4 player game (classic again? maybe) and we have 8 players left in each grp. These 8 will play 2 games against each and one of eachother. The two who gains the most points in each group will play against eachother to grant us a winner of each group. And the 4 who are left will either play a 4 man game. or play it out as a single elimination mini mini tournament.

Havent thought about which map it should be played on yet though. (Came up with the idea above as i wrote this)

What do you think about this idea? Doable? Stupid? Good? Bad?

Thanks

CCC Masters had 640 players divided into 4 divisions. As far as I know, that's the largest one ever done.

Ok, thank you.

----------------------

I would kinda like to have a little discussion on how you all would like the tournament to be if it is going to be this large. Might even turn it to 768 players, divided into 6 groups.

Since i am trying to make it as large as possible, then i really need to know what everyone like the best.

Thank you

I think it's a good idea. But first I suggest you to figure out if you want to run it alone or not. Also, how difficult it will be. If you run it alone, then try to aim for simple format IMO. Less confusion, not that time consuming and might be easier to find people. I could make my Olympic tourneys 500-600 or even more people but it would be too much for me to handle, I think. OP and Gozar ran the Cairns Coral Coast tourney together so I think that they can agree (or maybe not :P) that there's a difference if you handle 300 or so people at once and it would be completely different to have all 600sth at your hands.

I don't know what to suggest about settings and stuff. Simple maps probably, some kind of cards and either Chained or Unlimited fort probably? I think that people prefer No Fog more (but again, can't be sure, I'm just saying how I see things and my eyes can be blindfolded).

Just my 2 cents. Oh, one more thing... before launching anything, think things really really through to avoid any confusion :D

amazzony makes excellent points on all fronts.

If you are going to run a massive tournament (it can be done, don't let it scare you), then you need to keep certain things in mind.

1. Plan, Plan, Plan, take a few days off, and the PLAN some more before announcing it.
2. See if anyone wants to split the load with you once you have your plan worked out.
3. Stay consistent throughout the entire thing. If you let yourself get behind, you will hate the day you were born.

Thanks a lot, both Amazzony and Optimus Prime.

I won't be doing this alone, since that would take up WAY to much time + if i were to not be able to update and do games etc for a few days, then some complications might appear. So it would be great if i had some helping me do this.

I will probably make this tournament, dont know when though. Will have to plan this as Optimus very well said etc.

But since i want this to be a HUGE tournament. Which is the best way to promote the tounament? Send out mass mails to thousands of people?
Any suggestions is greatly appriciated.

Thank you

The way to get good advertisings is to make a sig, and then spam/post in all the forum. Make sure you give a link to it. :D

How to get players? First, let it sit for a week or so. So everybody who constantly visits the forums will get a chance to join. After that, think about sending invites by PMs. For my Olympic tournament I sent out appr 1500 messages. I looked up all 1v1 tournaments (because mine was 1v1) and messaged those people. If I ran out of those then I looked up 1v1 games and messages those people. I also took some random pages of scoreboard and messaged those people because I needed people with certain amount of points.
And I did it all when there was no mass PM

Anyway, it takes quite some time to get the players and send invites so prepare yourself :)

Thanks Sir. Ricco and amazzony, very good tips.

Now when i got this out of the way, i just need to find some people who are willing to make this together with me.
I think about 4 people is enough to handle the tournmanet, me included.

If anyone is intressted in doing this together with me, the PM me so we can talk about how we shall set things up.

Thank you

Create a nice little layout for what you have planned, just general idea, nothing too specific (unless you want to of course :P) and i think i may be willing to lend a helping hand  I have a quick question first though... have you ran a tournament before? ive seen you participate in a couple (its all good even if you havnt) But i would say if you dont have alot of experience try making one or two small tournaments, 16 or 32 players maybe just to get the general feel of it ya know? because all the advice in the world isnt going to do as much good as some gold ol' fashion experience :)

I do kinda agree with Natewolfman. If you've never hosted a tournament before, it'll probably be harder to get people to join, especially a massive amount. But, with your respectable rank and some strong co-organizers, it should probably work out ok.

agreed, the name of the tourny organiser helps so much. get someone
optimus, gozar, night strike, nate, ammazzony, sir ricco, me to an extent godd. and you will have less trouble filling it
but i do recommend that you run a smaller tourny first, my biggest mistake is that i went too big without experience so yer
just my 2 cents

You all have asked if i've had a tournament before, and the answer is yes. I am hosting one as we speak. The Conqueror of Realms! tournament.

Can't say i've found it hard to host it, very simple accually. I've tryed to come up with a few ideas, but most of them have already been made. So i thought about making a HUGE tournament, and why not make the BIGGEST?

And so far i got jennifermarie to help me, with a few others on the way.

Will PM out a few requests to help out aswell.

And Lord Voldemort, you asked about how i've planned for the tournament to be played.

I'm thinking to have 6 groups, with 128 players in each group. Each of these 6 groups will have 1 player to host it. So it will be me and 5 others who are doing this together.

In round 1, then we have a 4-player game (maybe, classic, flat rate, unlimited, sunny, where only the winner go through to the second round.
In round 2, there we start the 1 on 1's. (Thinking Doodle Earth for this one, flat rate, chained, sunny.

Now in Round 3 we have 16 players left in each group. 1v1 again, havent decided on map here, but preferbaly something with Fog of War.

Round 8, 8 players in each group. Havent decided if it should be a 4 player game or a 1v1 here.

Round 9, 4 or 2 players left. If it will be a 4 player game in round 8, then there will be a 1v1 here. And if its a 1v1 in round 8, then its a 4 player game on round 9.

Round 10, Now we got the winners of each group. 6 players. So i'm thinkning to have a 3-player game here. Perhaps on Classic, escalating, chained, with Fog of War.

Round 11, the grand final. 2 players left standing, a 1 on 1 game, classic should be the best map. No cards, adjecjent, Fog of War. (This is for it to be about skill :P)

That's the idea i got this far, it can all be changed if someone comes with a good idea which i like.

Thank You

ok my thoughts...
i say stick with something uniform...ie have it all singles or all 1v1 or half and half...sont go back and forth
umm no fog..fog isnt too popular with tourny players. u get the odd one but you wont fill 6 128 man tournies with fog
no doodle for 1v1...game is decided by drop and who goes first
and u also havent mentioned how the 6 tournies get blended..
it shows promise but it def needs some work
also pm lackattack ONCE its all sorted. ask about premium prizes. really big tournies he will usually allow for a premium prize coutesy of cc

There we have the blending of the groups.

And about your tip there Lord Voldemort about having it 1v1 the whole way instead of going back and forth i do understand. Will probably make it a 100% 1 on 1 tournament instead. Will have to remake it to make it work properly for 1 on 1

I'm having a little problem on the maps aswell, Classic is always good to have. But which other maps do YOU (you as in anyone who play CC) like the most for 1 on 1?

Thanks everyone!

I agree to the once that wrote before. I have said to you that I could help out. I also want to share my experiense as a new tourney organizer. I have hosted a small one first (if not conting Sweden Championship ofcourse that are a bit bigger), Davis Cup with 32 people. Now I run a really big one, it feels, Bring it on!!! that are loads of things to have sorted. There I have the great help of thekidstrumpet (his first tourney if I remember right). And I also run Grand Slam that are more work that are able to imagine. If you really feel like run this right now, do it. Otherwise I recomend you to escalate it up to there. I am doing is so...

About maps I recomend not to small or big onces and not to difficult and rare. Keep classic style of maps and it will be easier to find partisipants.

Perhaps you are right Lufsen, i did have some thoughts about it yesterday of being to much work.
I will most likely do the tournament, the question is just when.
When i first got the idea of making this huge tournament i didn't have a summer job, but now i've gotten one. So i won't have as much time as i was hoping to have.

I'll give it a thought. But still if i decide to not make it yet, i still want tips on how it should be built up from anyone of you all :)

Thank you

ayeaye, the more experienced players in general love these maps, but in terms of tourny creation they arent 100%necessary since (as ive seen) most people that join arent as big on the super specifics, but 42 maps are deffinately the ones i myself ove (more fair and what-not)

aaaanyways, i will help you, im always available to lend a bit of a helping hand for a good cause ;)

my suggestion? with a tournament this big 768 total players, that means until we have a champion you will play 8 rounds (plus a 3 player game at the end?) So i would say use a different map every round, though then you will be dangeriously close to looking like point grubbers :P lol but thats not a big deal, almost any tourny you make is going to resemble another

Thought hard and well about this, and i've decided that i don't have the time to handle this tournament at this time.

When i first wanted to make it, i didn't have a summer job. But now i do. So i don't think i will be that fond of handling a tournament like this when i'm working.

+ If i would make it now, then it would take a few weeks(or more) to get enough players. Which means that it would be played DURING the summer. Which isn't the best time to host a huge tournament with everyone going to vacation and stuff.

However, i will (most likely) make the tournament at the end of the summer. In August i belive. So i will have lots of time and plan this, which i will do.

This, however, doesn't mean the topic should be closed. Becuase i still want tips on how people in general want a big tournament to be built up. Which maps they like to play the most, etc etc.

Thank you

Lot's of time to plan and develop is not a bad idea. Spend a few minutes here and there over the summer and think of different ways to make it work.

I've spent months building and then re-doing tournament ideas before. Sometimes that can be the fun part.
