Is this cheap?

Post by General_Flagg »

I was playing a game where I was able to take over the Middle East, but I wasn't having much luck taking over any place else. No one would ally me, so I just told everyone I was giving up in chat, and to come in invade me. I even sent my soldiers on suicide attacks so all the territories would be 1s.

However, no one seemed too interested in me. For literally weeks I sat in the Middle East, undefended and unbothered by my neighbors. I finally got sick of waiting, and launched an attack on Europe. I now control pretty much all of Western Europe, and I have a strong military to defend it.

But my question is; is this kind of activity frowned upon? I waited for a long time but no one attacked me.

It's not really orthodox, but people need to be on their guard - it's not just a game of dice and board, but also of people and playing the people behind the screens.

Just another strategy I guess

If you are going to start giving up and suiciding in games then you will end up with a heap of neg feedback. You are clearly not long on patience so I would advise playing on smaller maps and definitely avoid no card games.

Well, it was my first game online Risk game, and I was doing a horrible job. I went on and joined other games where I became more skilled, but I didn't think there was any way for me to redeem myself in the first one, so I just gave up.

And sorry, but what's a "muppet"?

Unfortunately. Honestly, why treat new comers better than the older people? The older people are more loyal to the site anyway.

But either way, if you can't handle a little insult, you don't belong on the internet. Or at least not any place on the internet where there is some form of communication with other users.

honestly, I think that your idea of suicide attacks is your choice, I would not do it my self, and I think you could have thought of something better, but, whatever you want, it just makes it easier for the other players

It's because the newbs often come in and say the same thing that we just heard by a different noob yesterday. After a while, it gets frustrating and us old-timers start to lash out at them.

I think I found the game in question and it doesn't matter you are still going to lose.

"Giving up" is definitely frowned upon here, so I wouldn't make a habit of it unless you are looking for lots of negative feedback.

What you did was silly, but I don't think it would be considered cheap.

Suiciding tends to be frowned upon, because it's disruptive. It's like somebody watching a game of chess who decides that he's bored, so he runs off with one of the players' queens. And because it's a valid move, that player now has to keep playing without it. So don't do that. Especially with 14 territories and a subcontinent; you may have been the weakest player on the board, but a lot can change quickly.

But since you survived, just because you previously gave up isn't a good reason to assume you won't try again given the chance. It's not like breaking an alliance, because you don't gain anything from giving up. So no, not cheap.

Also: asking a specific player for an alliance and getting no reply isn't the same as nobody being willing to ally with you. But you're not likely to get one unless you can offer something. At the time, mstreib was stronger than you and in a completely different board position. There was no "I'll lay off you if you lay off me so that we don't fall behind everyone else" thing going on. Usually alliances are region-specific and time-limited.

Alright. Thanks for the help (Except for that one guy), and I'll stop giving up so easily in the future.

Sorry to revive this topic, but I have another question.

In this one game, me, my friend, and some other guy formed a three-man alliance. The guy attacked me and my friend without calling off the truce. We then wiped him off the face of the board.

I left him some negative feedback, and he argued that you don't have to call off a truce to attack. Is this true?

Well, technically, you don't "Have" to do it, but from all experiences I have had you're not going to makea lot of friends with his tactics. Especially in a 3 person truce. If you screw over one tehn the other two will likely come after you if they are strong enough.
