you can't get away with only once a day, in my opinion. A badly timed opponent turn, combined with being slightly later then the previous day, results in missed turns. I personally maintain at least twice a day (morning and evening), with slightly more if I have the time and feel like it.
Having teammates to discuss the game with in doubles, trips or quads encourages slightly more active behaviour, to facilitate good communication.

Back when I had the luxury of seasonal lay-offs, I was on CC many times a day.
Now that I work all year round, I'm sometimes hard-pressed to get online twice a day. Sometimes once.

I log in twice a day, but I don't keep many active games these days.
Also, your poll might draw more relevant data if you made the selections better. Instead of 'a couple, several, a few,' numbers like '1-2, 3-4, 5-6' would draw more accurate data.

I used to just get on at night but since I started working from home it's become a real problem
