Characteristics of Your Opponents

One of the best ways for your strategy to succeed is to understand your opponents.
In this game would you say that there are there certain types of opponents? If so, can you list some and explain their characteristics?

If this is so, how often are you able to utilize this information? Do you ever watch your opponents in their own games (without you) to learn their characteristics and patterns of strategy or do you just play everyone the same and learn as you go?

It depends on the importance of the game. If I think it’s an important game I put more thought, care, and study into it, including learning what the opponent might do. Most games I just play as I go.
