This is the eighth and final entry in a short series of tournaments celebrating my favourite maps of 2011. The first tournament in this series used No Spoils, the second Flat Rate, the third was Nuclear, the fourth Escalating, the fifth used Randomized settings, the sixth used the settings of the SoC, and the seventh used DoomYoshi's favourite settings.
This tournament, the culmination of my efforts on what is in many ways my favourite series, will feature "Optimum" settings. There are three Escalators, two Flat Rate phases, two Nuclear, and two with No Spoils. Five of them are Foggy and four are Sunny. Although I have to some degree forced them into this mold of having two of each Spoil (and one extra Esc, that being the most popular Spoil type) it wasn't random or arbitrary. I have given considerable thought to which type each map is played on.
In Conquer Rome, for instance, I find that nukes are the perfect threat to prevent people from ceaselessly stacking on their barbarians. Northwest Passage definitely begs for Escalating spoils, to blast through the maze in long runs and score some kills. California with its classic gameplay is a map almost tailor-made for the Sunny Escalating specialist. Fractured China and Rorke's Drift, with their generous autodeploys, are the perfect No Spoils maps. Of the two, Rorke's is definitely the one that deserves the fog, to allow stealing the game through the map objective. Middle Ages is a natural Flat Rate map, where the bonuses are generous but difficult to assemble, and cashing a set is just the right boost to complete that string of towers!
Eligibility: To play in this tournament, you must be premium, have a turns-taken record of 97% or better, at least 100 completed games, and be at least a PFC on sign-up.
Procedure: In each tourney in this series, the first nine phases will consist of multiplayer Standard games. In each of these phases, only the first player eliminated from each game is eliminated from the tournament. All others will continue to the next phase. As soon as all games in a phase have had one player eliminated, I will begin the next phase with the survivors. Winning these games will not influence the course of the tournament; only that first elimination is significant.
If someone wins a map by the victory conditions or by round limit, without anyone having been eliminated, we will count the player with the fewest troops at the end of the game as the eliminee.
The four maps with victory conditions are: Transsib1914 (phase 2), Northwest Passage (phase 3), Conquer Rome (phase 6) and Roark's Drift (phase 7).
In the Final phase, all remaining players will play simultaneously in nine multiplayer Terminator games. These games will be completed and winning them will count, as will the number of kills.
Settings: All games will be 24-hour, Automatic, Sequential, Chained, with a 50-round limit and no Trench. Spoils and Fog settings vary from map to map.
The maps to be used are shown in the Phase spoilers below.
The finals will be different from the first nine phases.
