Last monday October 18, 2010, Calgary AB Canada elected a new mayor.
Tuesday the media was reporting how unusual it was that he happens to be a Muslim, a Canadian first. I don't know but presume some radicals would likely feel he is just another western infidel as he has lived here for a long time and has a degree from Harvard.
Discuss, I look forward to high levels of crazy talk mixed with some level headed discussion from persons like BaronVonPwn, enjoy.

Idk, maybe its a sign of change! That not everyone judges by the colour of one's skin? It's a good thing.
Yes, I would have to see his politics to know if I really think it was good or not. However, that they would look beyond his religion to elect him seems positive.

Do muslims have a particular colour to their skin? I'm just asking because I didn't mention anything about that. You wouldn't be prejudice and make an assumption would you?
Yes he has dark skin, not a factor in a Canadian city choosing a Canadian to be mayor. I honestly wonder if religion would have been, it never came up until the day after he was elected.
I voted for someone else based on my perception of integrity. I am hopefull he will do some good but his campaign reached comedic levels, in promises that could never be kept.
He's going to fix transit, help create a more intigrated city of mixed communities. He stopped just short of promising everyone a pony. Unless I just didn't hear about the pony.
I think it was significant since he's the first Muslim mayor in Canada and he was elected in a supposedly "conservative" city. However as far as I know his religion played essentially no role in the election. Though from what I read on Reddit he is from a very liberal sect of Islam.
Welcome. I had typed up a PM to you the other day. I didn't feel like discussing this in here at the time. I did want to chat with you about it. I'm obviously ok bringing it in here now.
Your assesments are all true in my opinion. As the Ann Couture incident shows we have a conservative atmosphere here. Provincially speaking the "Progressive conservative" party seems to own the place. It was anticipated that former Alderman Ric and newscaster Barb would compete for first with Naheed taking third. That happened in the early part of the count then he took off and won.I don't know if anti conservative sentiment partially influenced this election. I think it must have.
What really helped was a relative high youth voter turnout. While the elegible voter turn out was a pathetic 50% that was significant compared to the last few civic elections here.
I've never really thought religion played much part in Canadian politics. More likely, it's just not at the forefront, ever. For example, I know a lot of people are surprised (but not all that surprised, when you look at his policies) when they find out Harper is a born-again evangelical, and he's been the Prime Minister for almost 5 years already.
I think this is great! It's bad because of all the fish. Occasionally, when fire hydrants are to be painted red, with yellow trim, if located within 15' of the nearest road, thoroughfare, highwayilmer also played in Heat, in the role of a bank robber. Free Cialis should not matter when electing a mayor. People should be worried about PAT attempt failed when the holder failed to get the ball down. Coach Wilson said "at the time, 80% of likely voters polled knew of his religious preference, while 69% said it would have no bearing on London will host the 2012 Olympics, and Serbia, for one, plans on being there for the party!!!

A problem created by modern life that may not have a solution my friend. Even though I agree it's important we try to prevent it, shown by my tenacity to get through to the actual fire department. I refuse to call 911 next time I report an antifreeze spill that could enter the storm sewer system that leads to the river unfiltered.

precisely.
Time will tell. I'm not impressed with his education, indifferent to his religion and opposed to his campaign consisting of the sale of things he can't fix yet promises to.

True, I was using "skin" loosely to mean his "surface being",but I should have said "religion". You were correct to call me on that.

Sorry but I did feel a strong need to challenge that. There are absolutley racists here but over all even some of them consider people of color to be fully Canadian if they don't have an accent.

Wait... so someone's accent is important to voters? That's pretty weird lol.

Probably but what I was talking about was different. I have heard people make racist statements followed by being called out and questioned about a friend who is the same race explained by, "Oh that's different, he's Canadian." it was due to him being born here and not having an accent so he was considered "one of us."
I don't think it's a huge issue up here. Canadians tend to be Canadians.....moderate and sensible.
Glen Murray was the first openly gay politician to be elected to the position of mayor in a major North American city.
This was in Winnipeg in 1998. The earth didn't crack open and swallow us whole then either.
So I'm wondering what the big fucking deal is here. Why start this thread, other than to troll bait posters like Gabon X and Tzor?
Are you bored Player??
It's just a matter of time before Muslims take over Canada and Europe. They will have a tougher time in the United States and Mexico. Watch video to find out why:

I was thinking about posting that as well along with the appointment of Michaëlle Jean as Governor General. They are things that happened with little more than a shrug from the collective population. The media sometimes tries to make these incidents headline news, but the public really could care less. Ethnicity, religion, sex or sexual preference means little in how people vote. The public is more concerned with which hockey team the candidate follows...

I would also say that the fact it didn't come up until after he was elected says something pretty positive about his opponent.

Wait...no pony? He is clearly a Marxist.

Yeah the negative campaining against your opponant doesn't happen much up here. Having said that, there was one going on in Winnepeg. Launched against the incumbent "Sam Katz." I don't know who was responsible.
For shame, did you vote for him Rockets? j/k

I mostly wanted to see if BaronVonPwn heard and chat a bit about it. However I'll be honest and admit that I'm looking forward to the troll baiting part of it. Initially I didn't want that so I didn't make it on tuesday or wednessday.
What amuses me is I never heard a word about him being Muslem and in fact thought he was a non practicing Sikh. The first I heard of it was someone on face book talking about it. I said I was glad it didn't come out until the day after he was elected so it didn't become part of a smear campaign. I think part of why there was not a smear was the fact that no one took him as a threat to the consevative that everyone including me thought was going to take it in a run away. Unless there was a one and it was so pathetic I just never heard anything.
