Are you proud of your country?

I ask because while in the "Does the world hate America" thread i noticed a few Americans with real shame for what their country has beocme.

This surprises me a little because America is doing a lot to be proud of and still, in my opinion, has a lot going for it.

Your cultures are now very set in stone and each state has something different to offer from the next. You have a huge music and film industry which a large part of he world are enjoying.

You contribute a lot to the world sciences and etc etc.

So im interested in what you each think of your country? Are you proud to be called a (Whatever you are?)
Obviously this applies to everyone not just Americans.

Me personally, i love the English culture, history (especially watching England learn and mature as a nation) but i am not impressed with the way our politicians are running our country or the way are people are reacting (or rather not reacting to it)

I think our culture is getting somewhat lost and we are becoming known for our chavvy element. And i hate the fact that so many people of England are fed up.

On the flipside we are producing many a decent scientist with probably the best probe module engineers in the world (yes its a small part of space exploration but an important one)

Our music, although not always to my taste is surprisingly succesful and our movies ... well some of them are good.

Our economy is crippling however but i think thats the case with a lot of countries at the moment.

I agree with you on that one. But all people are guided to an extent my society and culture. And that society and culture differs depending on the country (for the most part) and so often there are traits which are nationally shared.

Equally the tribal community has dated back to the very earliest of days and while some people will feel pride when their village won the local flower arranging competition, others might feel pride that someone in their country had been the one to find the cure to cancer without being wrong to do so.

I'm proud of my country, yes, but by no means patriotic. Where you are born and grow up is just pure luck and not in your hands. There are parts of the UK that I admire and really think are great (like the universities, a centre-left electorate and the cultural diversity), but then there are so many parts that are horrible (chavs, drinking culture, sensationlist tabloids). Its a mix and match, overall I like it here but I'm pretty sure I could cope anywhere and grow fond of any place I live in for 20 years as long as I have friends with me.

I didn't miss or over look your point, I'm just interested to see how, when given a list of three random countries, you would rank them.

I've recently found that country is too ambiguous when considering an answer for this country. Are we talking about the government that is ruling the country, the different cultures that are present, the natural environment, or something else?
As a Chinese-Canadian, I like to take viewpoints into both the PRC and Canada.
I claim neutrality towards the Communist Party of China, but everything else that is currently present in the PRC is not something to be proud of. The high air pollution level, corruption, lack of basic morals (ex.the intentional sale of counterfeit products to make abnormal profits are very common right now), and severe ignorance within the general populance are just several aspects. I am however, proud of Chinese cuisine.
There are a lot more positive things about Canada. People are nicer (usually), the crime rate is lower, and there's always enough resources to sustain the developed economy. However, I find it disturbing that Canada is becoming increasingly reliant and influenced by its neighbour, because the customs of Canada are much better than many other developed countries.

Not especially no.
I'm English and while there's things in our history that I am proud of there's an awful lot more of which I'm decidedly not.
I find jingoism and overly-patriotic sentiment deeply unsettling to be honest, however at the same time I'd stand up for my nation/heritage in a heartbeat were anyone else to slight it.
BUT I'm very proud of the fact that our crappy little island nation's tongue has effortlessy conquered the globe! Take that beautiful and poetic French! In your face complicated pictogram Chinese!

Mainly I feel very lucky just to have been born in a free and democratic country , overall I feel proud of my English heritage but wouldnt say we are better or worse currently than a number of other nations.

I would. But only for the sake of acknowledging that such things can be measured in an albeit somewhat subjective manner. Naturally I wouldn't see a Greek, German or French man and assume that anyone is better than the next person. But if we're talking about a nation's general greatness or lack thereof then I'm fine with talking candidly about it.
