2nd Best Religion

Post by Frigidus »

If you, for whatever reason, couldn't follow the religion you do right now, which religion would you follow? I don't mean "couldn't follow" in the sense that you're prevented from following it, this is just a theoretical thing.

Being Catholic, I run into many senarios when I feel a great sense of guilt. This happens to be a common joke made about Catholics too. Anyways, this occurs a lot for me when I hit "grey areas" in my life. So honestly I feel like the wieght would be lifted a lot if I followed a religion that had more of a "Do your best attitude, it doesn't matter-people make mistakes" ...I don't know which religion out there that would be. If not, I would probably pick a close Athiest view. However, I think reincarnation would be cool at certain points....so for fun I guess HINDU.

Greek or Russian Orthodox. If those are taken out of the picture, than Lutheran, I suppose. If only because I have a lot of family that is Lutheran.

Islam. I think that will be the only constitutionally protected faith very soon. I'd get hooked up with all sorts of special treatment, just to make sure I wasn't offended.

Islam's a bit too strict for me, but I think it can be as strict as you want it to be (but not as lax as most Christians).

I'd go with a double-dose of Zen Buddhism.

Judaism

Now I'll ask you since you're an atheist: if you were forced to be a member of a religion, but got to choose which one, what would it be?

Tough call. It would definitely be something with a pantheon. One god just seems boring to me. Regrettably there aren't many popular pantheonic religions around any more. At its height ancient Egyptian religion is the most intriguing to me, and its pantheon isn't full of violent or wrathful gods.

Good choice, although if I were in your situation I'd go with the Greeks. The Egyptians were pretty impressive though.

So.................

Clash Of The Titans or The Mummy?

Did you just say "isn't"? well, maybe not so much with the wrathful but there was some pretty violent stuff if I recall, though of course that was mostly against eachother.

Best thing about the Egyptian Pantheon is the fact that many deities were credited with the same thing and how this was no problem to Egyptians.

I imagine religion was pretty abstract to the Egyptians. Their main focus in life was the Nile, and their pantheon was in a lot of ways an extension of it. And yeah, it isn't devoid of violence, it just wasn't all about it like a lot of other religions of the same time period.

Based on what he posts in these fora, it sure as hell isn't Christianity.

Actually, being a Christian has nothing to do with religion. Religion is man made and thus flawed.
