We'll be having a special tossing session this evening, but I don't think most locals join in this tradition.

All I can find on this is a competition in Australia where big dudes toss dwarves, to see who can throw dwarves the farthest. That can't possibly be right.

Re: Feb 16th
(or "Shrove Tuesday").
The day befire Lent begins when eggs and flour and sugar were traditionally used up.
Nowadays, most Brits remember the pancakes, but don't go in for Lent.
I (despite being famously non-religious) usually do give up something for Lent, just to tone up the willpower muscles. It's often not a food thing, 'cos I do all the cooking - so if for instance I gave up cheese, I'd either have to deny it to the family (at least in cooked things) or make a separate meal for myself.
Anyhow, this year I'm giving up nuts.
(So I'm ignoring all of Jay and Phatscotty's posts until Easter)

ROFL, I really think that would be more fun, but I was refrring to our annual tossing of pancakes, or as the cunning marketing department would have us believe, jif lemon daypimpdave wrote:All I can find on this is a competition in Australia where big dudes toss dwarves, to see who can throw dwarves the farthest. I myself shall be tossing a few later before heading out to the local public house to wash all the pancake goodness down with a jar or two of the black stuff.
Edit: Which multi cultural differences remind me of the time Lack had to google the phrase 'butchers' after I told him I would have a butchers at something later

I used to do that but just sort of stopped a few years ago, when I gave up progressively easier things until there was no point. Wonder if I stll have the willpower to give up something I really enjoy for 40 days.jonesthecurl wrote: I (despite being famously non-religious) usually do give up something for Lent, just to tone up the willpower muscles. ...that's sorta the point.
But you're right. When I was about 12 (and actually very devout at the time) I gave up tea. This is unbelievable to my self of today.

If the Brits made a film about pancakes it'd be called Carry on Tossing.
