Paddy DJ, how many times do I need to tell ya mate, sheep are for rich folk. Give me a goat anyday. Easier to feed, horns you can hold on to, eat anything. i think that add twiter and facebook in home page,are wrong move,because you distract new people from main idea here.Actualy Lack advertise Twiter and Facebook,instead to focus on hes site. Before even implement these two advertise, never number of active player drop so low.

To answer the original question: yes. It's because it's a clique. This was highlighted in a recent C & A report.
A new player misunderstands a game setting.
He's told he's an idiot (by some).
He says he's young and English isn't his first language.
He's told people don't believe him and he's just a troll playing a hoax (by almost all).
He says he's upset about the personal attacks.
He's told to "suck it up, cupcake" (or words to that effect). There is also a lot of sarcasm which, not being a native English speaker, would be hard to understand (especially as it's only written).

Is that the sort of approach that's going to encourage a new player to stay?

Yes, he used a lot of bad language in game chat, and has rightly been warned for it. The evidence of whether or not he is young and Spanish could be read either way; there really is no way of knowing, although speaking to him in the chat room made me inclined to believe him. It would be an unbelievably complex hoax if it were such, way beyond most if not all of the brains here

But the salient point is that if novice and naive users can be treated that way - especially if they are genuinely young and distressed - what incentive is there for them?

I'm sure the guide scheme will help, but I suspect treating people with disdain because they're not one of "us" is going to be a continuing barrier.
Maybe a little more tolerance to newcomers would encourage them to hang around.
