Yep, I live in Chicago too, and instead of saying "oh", we say "ah"

I dont think an accent is that big of a deal at all. I mean you cant really help the way you were brought up to speak so really people with different accents dont have different Iq's at all.

I have a Southern accent becaue I was raised in the South and thats how everyone talks.

The fact that I live near a major airport and the diversity of my neighborhood has really caused me to have a mostly neutral accent. I don't say "y'all" or anything like that.

what about midwest accent?

Midwest is supposedly the "cleanest" US accent, or the easiest to understand. I agree but I'm from the midwest so I'm biased. One funny thing I've heard is that Wisconsinites (me) speak really fast? Anyone else ever heard that, doesnt seem like it to me.

Almost everyone thinks they either have no or a neutral accent because thats what they're used to.

You can tell a midwesterner if he says the words "root" or "roof." He will pronounce the "oo" like "foot" where the rest of the English-speaking world pronounces it like "moon" or "dude." He ill also call "pop" what everybody else calls "soda", except the greater Boston area, where it is "tonic".

It's not 'pop' in Milwaukee, but I hear that a lot when I go to Chicago.

One funny thing about Milwaukee is that instead of saying "water fountain," we say "bubbler" Nowhere else in the US have I heard that.

I say roof and root like that. But I do say "pop", so I am guilty of one thing.

And when people from Oklahoma come up from the 20 minute drive to here (I live in Kansas) we can tell the big difference of accents. Like they say "Buttin" instead of "Button"

I am from New Mexico and I have a very distinctive accent. Just because I have a accent does not mean that I am a dumb person.
Yes, there are some goofy people out there, but don't blame it on their accent. That has nothing to do with it.

Someone mentioned the word y'all...
What is wrong with that word?
