Hamster

Just bought one today. I'd like it so survive. Has anybody owned one, and is there anything I should know about taking care of them?

Soda water and Alka Seltzer. Works wonders.

Honestly, hamsters just don't last that long. Good luck, though.

A good hampster should live to around two years old. I've had ones die of old age at 1 1/2, others at 4.

We had one in our science class that would fall over every time we blew on it. It was pretty funny.

Just a theory, maybe you should've thought and asked about this before you purchased the hamster.

But i'm sure you'll be alright. Do you have any kids around the house that are likely to want to set it on fire or some other fucked up shit you hear about every so often? Then you might have a problem.

The three lessons I've learned from the three hamsters my family has owned:

1. Avoid threesomes with your neighbors' hamsters or any other hamsters you may buy. (EDIT: Unless they're all the same gender) Someone will get hurt.

2. I don't know how lazy you are but we almost never changed the cage, which probably affected the short lifespan.

3. In the winter, leave the heat on even when you're out or on vacation, or just put it on low but put the cage near the vent. That fur doesn't last them too long...

I had one live three long years. It was a male black bear hamster with enormous testicles that you could feel drag up your arm as it walked along. Mildly disturbing...

-don't get more than one, they dont like company
-make sure the cage isn't full in the sun
-clean out pretty rgularily (once a month mabye)

but clean his wheel once a week
water every other day
food every other day

I baught my dad a hamster last christmas. I kept it in my desk draw-two days befor chriatmas as well-best impulse buy ever!

anyway, she's still going but in the past my hamsters have all lived to 3 and 4.

Get a good cage! Some of them are clever little bastards and get out easily. Also, from my experience, they LOVE those little hamster balls. But make sure you have all stairs blocked off! They WILL go down them! It's nice if they have a little box to make a house in, and put in some tissue paper as well, for them to tear up and such... Also, don't put them in your room. They chew on the cage at night and it makes an awful sound that can keep you awake...

I learnt that last tip at the cost of a nights sleep Only it was the squeeky hamster wheel. In the end i used a piece of cardboard to block the wheel

I learned that one last night as well

. I bought a great exercise wheel that was guaranteed not to squeak. It doesn't; it sounds an unbalanced washer on spin cycle when she runs in it though.

I finally decided she'd have restricted access to the gym. She's in a reptile tank 20 gal. which I think is plenty big enough for her. She's got the same bedding and food that they used in the store. We're also trying to keep my 5-year-old son away from her as best as possible until I get her to my classroom.

She's really a cute and charming little creature. She set the tone of our relationship quite well last night. I put my hand in the tank and she stood on her hind legs (on the other end of the tank) and flashed razor sharp fangs at me. Hamster ball? Yeah I got one, any suggestions about getting her in it?

Nothing, it died when it was 8 years old. Well I was very young when I had it, I probably pettet it the wrong way (as far as fur is concerned), maybe forgot to feed it now and then..
