ATM There is a backlash against atheism within the Bible belt.

just replying to the original poster, i think religions should be allowed to be practised freely or rejected freely, according to the choice of the individual student. I don't know how it is in the States, but over here there are far worse things than religion when it comes to restricting free, creative or even logical thought. Such as a syllabus which encourages rote learning more than anything else.

I think it depends on where you go to school, really.

i wasnt claiming that there was anything necessarily wrong with it, just that the group of people highlighted in jesus camp are not nearly as minority of a group as say the westboro baptist church. The good and the bad that the belief system of that type of conservative xianty (jesus camp) shouldnt be discounted going forward.

Banning something doesn't make it disappear and those who are told you can't talk about it anymore start viewing themselves as martyrs. Before you know it their belief starts gaining popularity like wildfire and you have to deal with more zealots than before you banned it.

Just wanted to spout my own thoughts on this before I said you made some good points of your own Mr. Tonka.

if it should be banned then so should evolution which is a religion to its believers...present both issues fairly then let kids decide...but it wont happen cause when presented side by side only 1 makes sense and evolutionists are afraid to lose their popularity and control over the minds of the kids they brainwash from kidnergarden up...

if creation is really so stupid they shouldnt be afraid to teach kids about it so they know why its stupid....AN all powerful GOD or a chance in 400000000000000000000000000000000 that never happened before and will never happen again?

Hardly. When the idea of the Earth revolving around the sun was presented, was it a religion? The church opposed that just as strongly as it opposes evolution now. I'll put it this way: Is science a religion?

It isn't both issues though. There are literally hundreds of creation stories, and including some while excluding others is outright religious discrimination. That and the fact that you want something with no scientific basis taught in a science class gives you no ground to stand on.

your third point shows your ignorance of church badly...my dad who is a pastor of a baptist church regularly preachs about creation the proofs of the bible and evolution...we in our church hear the theories of evolution at least once a week and also the proofs of creation during my father sermons...also ive been to several creation/evolution confrences one by DR.Kent Hovind...btw if u can giveone solid proof of evolution he has 1 million dollars in the bank under a will for the person who can bring a proof that cant be unproven about evolution

Science is about finding out the truth and establishing it as fact. Atheists worship evolution like other facts and how much everybody else worships those facts; to say science is a religion is to say the knowledge that water is liquid is also a religion, among other things.

True, but I don't think anyone (mostly) really wants to ban religion from schools. At this point it's more a question of whether to teach creationism, or perhaps (for Americans at least) whether to include the Pledge of Allegiance in morning announcements.

The dude I was responding to doesn't know what life without religion is like, so he thinks that people without religion use science as their religion.

You know, I don't see how anybody could be so stubborn as to think they know more about atheists than atheists themselves (this applies to any group of people).
