How so? Neutral on respectfully recognizing his death at the hands of a crazed fan? I think you mean his music/earlier lifestyle, but that doesn't really have a lot to do with what happened 12/8/80.muy_thaiguy wrote:I'm a bit neutral on that one.Arbustos wrote:Speaking of music, it's still John Lennon's 27th Death Day in some time zones. Mainly because of some of his political stances leading up to that point.Arbustos wrote:How so? Neutral on respectfully recognizing his death at the hands of a crazed fan? Any specific examples? He "matured" a lot before he died...muy_thaiguy wrote:Mainly because of some of his political stances leading up to that point.Arbustos wrote:How so? His concieted boast of how he was "more popular then Jesus," for starters.Arbustos wrote:Any specific examples? of what you've heard about that has been distorted at best. I actually bought a rare CD with the interview on it just so I could hear it for myself.
The reporter who originally asked him the question was a friend of his, and he thought it was off-the-record at that point anyways. He was actually bothered by the fact that more people knew about the Beatles worldwide than Jesus (the tone of voice makes this obvious, as does taking the statement in context of everything else he said). It was probably true, too. They were selling out shows at the Budokan, in the Philippines, you name it. In his apology (or explanation of what he really meant), he made clear what he had meant to express with the statement. The whole thing just shows what the media can do to one's reputation, even after you explain or apologize. I mean, look, here we are 40 years later talking about it.
