Battle of the Bands [Updated - Seriously!] :P

Postby Tieryn on Thu Nov 22, 2007 8:25 am

So, A new tourney idea has sprung upon me. Finally, your favourite bands get to battle it out on the world stage for global supremacy!. It's time to Fight For Your Right to deploy, Fortify Me To The Moon and go Killing In The Name.

All games will be standard, casual and sequential. You may pick all other settings that suit your band (or yourself). So for example, my favourite band is Tool, so I'm going to be them, and you can't be :P First in, best dressed. Post date is final, no discussions will be entered into.

And I think Tool are a pretty mental band, so I'm going to go with 8 Thoughts (although I've never really liked it :P but nyeh) also I think Tool are escalating, unlimited and definately fogged.

There, it's that easy. Even let the band make up the story of the map for you. It'll be more fun that way. Try explain your choices. (any rationalisation is acceptable). Play your bands map, not your own.

So, now to the nitty gritty of structure. I've had a problem in the past with my tournaments being too big/complex and getting overwhelming, so I'm going to work to change that. I will attempt to split groups into the following genre based brackets.

Rock, Metal, Hip Hop/Reggae, Pop, Electronic, Country/Folk, Jazz/Blues, Art Music/Progressive

Of course, as Tool, I will be in Metal.

I am happy to have long-winded and self-important discussions about which band belongs in which genre, and if we get enough in one genre I am happy to split it into sub-genre's if deemed necessary or screamed loud enough. Get your muso wank on in here!

So that's 8 brackets to begin with. I will look to have 5 bands in each bracket. You will each play 5 games, one at a time (so freemium is okay) against each other. 5-player and rotating around each bands "home turf". Also in order to reduce the workload of me sending out mass messages, I'm going to distribute. It is the responsibility of the Band Headlining the Gig to pm their support acts. I will message you when it is your home map, and let you know the game number, password and your opponents names. You will need to forward on the message to 4 people. Not that difficult a task, I'd hope :)

The scoring system will be 3 points for a win, and 2 points for an elimination. Highest score from a match is 9 (with a win and all 3 eliminations). Reporting and keeping track of your own score is your responsibility. I will also do it, by checking through game logs. I will keep a semi-regularly updated scoreboard in the post below. But you need to make sure I've got it right. No need to post about it in the thread, I would rather have all the extra posting be about wanky music stuff. If you feel I'm made a mistake with the scores, pm me about it.

Once each bracket has been completed, and a winner declared, I will split the 8 brackets into 2 meta-brackets. I think it will be

Rock, Metal, Jazz/Blues, Country/Folk and Pop, Hip Hop/Reggae, Electronic, Art Music/Progressive

Each meta-bracket player will play a 4-player game on each players home turf. Same scoring system applies (unless I discovered it was faulty and had it replaced).

The top two players of each bracket will form the final bracket, and will again conduct a 4 round robin with an extra map. The 5th and final map will be classic, flat, unlimited to represent Global Domination. The winner will be the one with the highest score. If there is a tie, there will be a back count to scores in previous rounds. In the unlikely event of a perfect tie, a single 2 player match will be played on world 2.1, no cards, adjacent... Because I'm a mean bastard... (this might change if that actually happens).

So, to be in, post;
    Your band.
Your map settings (map/cards/fortifications/fog) and reasoning for each.
Your genre, which is disputable if enough people disagree.
Whether you are Premium or Freemium.
The first concert you ever went to.
The first album you ever owned.

Okay folks, here are the scores so far, sorry for the delay. This is all of round one, and most of round 2, but there's still 3 rounds to come. Looking at this I'm thinking perhaps this might not be the best scoring system, but oh well, we're going to ride it out, and we may need to have tie breakers at the end of each division before the semi's and finals.

You're not :P

Tool is rock, not metal. Progressive rock to be exact. Well, as close to exact as can be defined by genres.

Actually, Tool might be under Alternative metal, depends how somebody looks at it :D

Anyway, I've been thinking about it and I don't put together any connections so...

Nightwish / metal / Crossword / Flat Rate / Chained / No FoW

I'm not a concert person (but I think it might of been Tina Turner :D ) and album - probably some Best Of ABBA.

Hmm

Group - Iron Maiden
Genre - Metal
Map - Classic cuz Maiden rule the world
Cards - Flat cuz everything else sounds flat in comparison
Forts - Chained
Fog - No cuz they know exactly where they are going and where they've been

My first gig was at Evesham Town Hall. It was a local band called Wrathchild. I was a 13 year old in heaven amongst strange looking denim and leather clad people. I managed to get pissed by sniffing a vodka and coke. It is a night that will live with me forever, even though(against my wishes) my dad picked me up at the end.

Oh god here we go. The first album I paid for was Arrival by ABBA(I still got it). My first proper album was Killers by I.M.

I better get this quick, because it seems a lot of metalheads around this parts.

I'll play as Kreator as they are by far my best seen live experience.
It was in Skopje, in 2004, Violent Revolution was their latest album and Enemy of God had just leaked on the internet :)

Genre - Metal
Map - Germany
Cards - Flat
Fortifications - Chained
Fog - No

First Album I paid and owned was AC/DC - The Razor's Edge

I will grab Wolfmother.

Being from Australia, I suppose the Australia map is appropriate, unlimited fortifications make sense, and I'm feeling the no cards.

I'm going to classify Wolfmother as rock, although I have heard it called metal.

I'm premium.

First concert I went to (cue laugh track) Backstreet Boys back when I was in elementary school. First concert I actually bought tickets to was illScarlett.

First album I owned - Wolfmother... on VINYL. I dare you to tell me that isn't cool.

I don't think I would say it is my least favourite. The cover of "Big Yellow Taxi" they do hurts to listen to.

I will back you up on that. If there is only one "Metal" category, it should be for harder stuff.

So far rock and metal have taken the day. We can have more bands in these genres. I will remove genres that don't fill up (art/country/blues?) and shuffle people into other genres, and split genres if I need to. So far the player list is...

Rock
Pink Floyd Gozar British Isles Escalating Chained No
Wolfmother Denominator Australia No Cards Unlimited No
Foo Fighters Lord Voldemort British Isles Escalating Unlimited No
The Headstones Keiths31 Classic No Cards Chained No

Metal
Tool Tieryn 8 Thoughts Escalating Unlimited Yes
Slipknot Edwinissweet Age of Merchants Flat Unlimited Yes
Nightwish Amazzony Crossword Flat Chained No
Iron Maiden Gypsys Kiss Classic Flat No
Kreator Sweko Germany Flat No
Hip Hop/Reggae

But you obviously fail to read the instructions on what to write in your entry. I'll assume you're to go in metal, but what map do you want, and what settings? Read the original post please.
