I know gas prices are higher in other countries then they are here, but what about things like postage, sales taxes, etc.?

How much are they?

Well, I recently moved from NY to PA. In NY, sales tax is I believe 8.75%. In PA, there is no tax on clothes. And, in a neighboring state, Deleware, there is no sales tax at all!!!

Yeah, but on the other hand you'd have to admit to people you lived in Delaware.

In the UK, VAT is our sales tax, and its 17.5%.

Second class postage stamp is 23p (42 cents) but you need more than one for anything other than a basic small letter.

20 cigarettes are £5 ($9)

Xbox 360 console only: £272.00 ($489)

Xbox 360 game: £49.99 ($89)

12 months car tax: £210 ($378)

Average property price (nationwide) £199,184 ($358,531)

Average property price (London) £317,790 ($572,022)

Hey! I have a friend in Deleware! LOL.

Okay, well, I don't know all the prices of those things, but, I'll give it a go:

Cigarette average in PA: I'd say $4.50 - $5.00 (In NY city, $9).

12 months car insurance (is that the same as car tax?) That can range from say... $700ish to well over $3000, depending on the car and driver record.

Average home prices.... well, in our area of PA... I'd say $400,000ish.... on Long Island where I came from, probably $450,000 - 500,000.

That is just my best estimation of things, I didn't look anything up.

Ha, I wish car tax was insurance

My fully comprehensive insurance on a 06 Vauxhall Monaro was more than £4,000 ($7,200), but thats a lot more than most people pay, I've only been driving a year and its a pretty powerful car.

Alright, try this. In Tennessee:

our sales tax: 9.25%

20 Ciggys: I can get them for $3 at one place in town, but generally $3.33 (Marlboro. You want crap, you can get it as cheap as $2.10)

First class postage: 39c, right?

XBox 360: Was going for $449, not sure what it is now.

X360 game: $50, probably, I'm a PS2 guy

12 months "car tax": probably called excise tax here, or registration fee.. $24 to put tags on the car.

Average property: Dunno really except for my county, and it's about $70,000.

You think its bad now? In those days, "a bag of gold will buy a loaf of bread" Bag of gold = a days wages. Can you imagine a loaf of bread costing around $100 more or less?

Try living in Ontario..Cigarettes= $9+, 24 Beer $38+, we have a general sales tax of 15% and a provincial sales tax of 10%. However, I can go to the hospital for free anytime I like and whine about my high-blood pressure and bleeding ulcers from worrying about being poor..

In my experience, places without sales tax on food, necessities, etc. will make up for it on personal property tax. The government will get their money one way or another.

Here in Washington, sales tax is around 8%. However, in Oregon, there is no sales tax!

Gas - $3.09/gallon

Average House - $200,000 for an upper middle class house? My house was made/sold in '94, and it cost $180,000. It's a really nice house. In my area of town, there are hundreds if not thousands of upper middle class/middle class houses in numerous neighborhoods.

I don't drink any beer or smoke, so don't ask me on that.

Postage in America is about, 39 cents now I think?

Xbox 360 pure console is $299, with everything $399, so with tax that would be $322.92 for pure console and $430.92 for everything.

- 1 bottle of rum: Q40-Q90 ($5.25-$12) in supermarket, Q200-Q600 ($25-$80) in discoteques
- IVA (sales tax): 12.5%
- videogame: Q630 ($83)
- gasoline: Q28/gallon ($3.70)

It may well be relative to what minimum wage is as well...In Ontario, I believe it is currently $7.50/hour. God knows, there are many more impoverished than us poor Canadians....But still, I THINK i'D PREFER TO BE RICH!
