Do you believe that the Bible contains contradictory material, or any absurdities?

This topic truely is absurd Truman. You are not going to change the athiest minds as much as they are not going to change yours.
Why cant you religious nuts stop trying to preach to everyone and just go and live your lives. As long as you are content in your delusions and dont bother anyone then you can think whatever you want.
How you can take as 'faith' a 2000 year old game of chinese whispers is totally beyond me. Like most religious texts it is so ambiguous and you can read whatever you like into it and use it to explain the existence of just about everything.
You truely must be bored

Actually, I'd really like to see a contradiction. I hear things like how the Bible is bogus and blah blah blah and whatever, but not one contradiction has been posted. Why? Can't someone do it? Is it a scary thing to do?

Why not shut up and just post a darn contradiction instead of posting immature bantering.

Wow you must be a priest.
I am sure your 'God' would love you using the word 'fucking' to describe his words. Sounds like an each way bet to me.

Thank you! Someone who understands that some people can make their own descisions about their faith! I may disagree with you a fair amount, but that statement is fine by me.

The main thing is Rapture. I have no problem with the majority of the rest, and totally believe it, but rapture I have a hard time with. Not sure why. Maybe this is something for a PM, jay?

Sorry about the double post, but I did have something to say.

I know that pretty much all of the New Testement was written by the people who actually saw and was involved with the actions that took place. Ex. In Revelation 1 God specificly "sent his angel [to communicate to] his sevant John. So these stories should be pretty right on. Also, Jesus being alive after he died was also written by his deciples who saw him. Thoes are just a couple of examples, there are plenty more.

As for contradictoins, I've looked at some websites about this. Most of the contradictions used on these websites are just sentances used out of context, making them not real contradictions. From my own reading of the bible I have not found any contradictions myself. Yeah... thats it...

That's true, but that's not what you said. You said that the Council of Nicea decided what was included in the OT and the Torah. They only decided what was in the OT. Which was based on the Torah.

If I posted a contradiction of my own I'd be concluding the fact without challenge. This thread is meant for challenges and so far I've received none.

I think many here think I want contradictions posted to prove the Bible is contradictory; am I right? I want contradictions posted so that I may answer them and prove they aren't contradictions.

Alright, you want some contradictions?

God good to all, or just a few?
PSA 145:9 The LORD is good to all: and his tender mercies are over all his works.

JER 13:14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together, saith the LORD: I will not pity, nor spare, nor have mercy, but destroy them.

War or Peace?

EXO 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

ROM 15:33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

Who is the father of Joseph?

MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

Which first--beasts or man?

GEN 1:25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
GEN 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

GEN 2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
GEN 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

The number of beasts in the ark

GEN 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

GEN 7:8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, GEN 7:9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

How many stalls and horsemen?

KI1 4:26 And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.

CH2 9:25 And Solomon had four thousand stalls for horses and chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen; whom he bestowed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.

The sins of the father

ISA 14:21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities.

DEU 24:16 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

Finally, someone comes out with some.

Acclaimed contradictions are in bold, answers are in regular type.

Jeremiah refers to God punishing those who stand against Him in wickedness. In the Psalms, King David talks about how the Lord is good to all men who obey and seek Him. He is righteous when He destroys, for whenever He does destroy anyone in the Bible, He does it out of righeousness. He put the Israelites into bondage because they turned their backs on Him. He even implies in two scriptures before that God is merciful and good to all who obey Him:

"And men shall speak of the might of thy terrible acts: and I will declare thy greatness.

They shall abundantly utter the memory of thy great goodness, and shall sing of thy righteousness."

--Psalms 145:6-7

This scripture refers to "goodness" as being "righteousness."

War or Peace?
EXO 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
ROM 15:33 Now the God of peace be with you all. Amen.

God is characterized by both. So was Ronald Reagan. So what?
Who is the father of Joseph?

MAT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.
LUK 3:23 And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.

Jacob was Joseph's true father. Heli was Joseph's father-in-law: Mary's dad. Umm, duh?

God directly formed animals out of the ground for Adam to name them. This doesn't mean he created them after Adam. It was just saving time so they didn't have to call all of the animals. How simple is that to understand?

The number of beasts in the ark

GEN 7:2 Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male and his female: and of beasts that are not clean by two, the male and his female.

GEN 7:8 Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the earth, GEN 7:9 There went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, the male and the female, as God had commanded Noah.

Refers to the animals going into the ark two by two, not only two of each kind.

Read the verses carefully and you will see that there is no contradiction. They had chariot teams with ten horses and ten men per chariot in case you got a flat tire! If he had "four thousand stalls for horses and chariots" he would need fourty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots.

If taken into context, Deuteronomy 24:16 says that God establishes a number of laws by which the people would be judged and kept. In 24:16, He acknowledges that an individual is personally responsible for what they do. If a man commits murder, his son is not to be put to death for the deed, neither, if the son has committed adultery should the father be executed. The Bible says, "...every man shall be put to death for his own sin."

In Isaiah 14, this is not speaking of a son being executed for the sins of his father. If taken into context, this is to be a prophecy concerning the coming destruction upon a nation. Because the nation had evil leadership of their king, God pronounced destruction upon the Babylonian people. And guess what? In about 540 B.C., Babylon was overthrown by the Medes. The city was left in ruins, it stayed in ruins, and we found it in ruins.

More please.

Websites are no good. A better source would be a credible, recognized university. There is a whole field of study devoted to Jesus works. Some respected scholars include Bart Ehrman, Robert Funk, and Dominic Crossan.

For some reason many Christians think they know a lot about the bible when most of them have never read them in their original greek (and yet they accuse others of not doing their research)

IT was written in Latin first not Greek. Although it is debated most scholars believe the first "official" bible was written in Latin.

The original bible was probably written in Latin like he said and even if it wasn't it's just as likely it was written Hebrew as Greek.

Here's some contradictions I found on this website: http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/contra/by_name.html

Who makes people deaf and blind?

God:
Exodus 4:11. Who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD?

Foul spirits:
Mark 9: 17, 25. And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit. Jesus ... rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

Is death final?

Yes:
Job 20:7. Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung.

Isaiah 26:14. They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased they shall not rise.

No:
Luke 14:14. Thou shalt be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.

1 Corinthians 15:16. For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised.

When was Jesus born?

Before 4 BCE:
Matthew 2:1. Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king.
(Herod the Great died in 4 BCE.)

After 6 CE:
Luke 2:1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)
(Quirinius became governer of Syria in 6 CE, ten years after king Herod's death.)

Did Jesus know everything?

Yes:
Colossians 2:2-3. Of Christ; In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

No:
Mark 13:32. But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.

Who brought evil on Job?

Satan:
Job 2:7. So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

God:
Job 42:11. Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him.

Should we try to please others?

Yes:
1 Corinthians 10:33. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

No:
Galatians 1:10. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Does righteousness come from following the Law?

Yes:
Luke 1:6. They [Zacharias and Elisabeth] were both righteous before God walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.

No:
Galatians 2:21. I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.

Can God be seen?

Yes:
Genesis 32:30. And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.

Numbers 14:14. For they have heard that thou Lord art among this people, that thou Lord art seen face to face.

No:
Exodus 33:20. There shall no man see me, and live.

John 1:18. No man hath seen God at any time.

Have fun.

Yes, and you can kill your neighbor, steal his car and rape his wife. Remember if you reject God, you reject His forgiveness of sin. So any sin you have commited or will commit you will answer for.
