Brushing "facts" (or so I've heard)
1. Brushing too much wears away the enamel
2. Fluoride in toothpaste has carcinogens (cancer causing) in it (DO NOT SWALLOW)
3. Mouthwash does little besides freshen breath. Brushing alone will kill those nasty bacteria.
4.Once a cavity starts...it can be "brushed over" rendering the need for fillings obsolete. (personal experience here...trust me)

I am humbled that a thread was started due to something I've said.
(Oh, and Stopper, hope you understand I was pointing out the absurd by being absurd
)
For me:
At least 2-3 times/day, sometimes more depending on what's going on (after a plate full of baby back ribs perhaps
) with toothpaste. Additional mouthwash at night before bed (mouthwash in the morning before coffee, yuck).
I'm curious what the "typical standard" frequency of visits to the dentist is for you Brits. Here for the most part its every 6 months for a cleaning. X-Rays every 2 years.
That is, of course, if you can schedule a dentist visit before having to pull your own teeth out.

Almost impossible to brush that much. You would have to brush at least 20 times a day, for over 10 years to do that.
2. Fluoride in toothpaste has carcinogens (cancer causing) in it (DO NOT SWALLOW)
Not true. That is propaganda used by people who don't want fluoride in things
3. Mouthwash does little besides freshen breath. Brushing alone will kill those nasty bacteria.
Once again, not true. Mouthwash, used properly, can kill most germs then brushing alone.

Huh...I bet it will come back later, but I have no evidence to back that up.

1. Maybe with a wire brush and crushed glass, tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body.jay_a2j wrote:Brushing "facts" (or so I've heard)

2. This may be true (haven't bothered to look it up), but so what, who eats toothpaste?
3. Some yes. Others no. Listerine e.g. is very helpful in cleaning the mouth and killing bacteria. Its just that most of the mouthwashes that are really killing bacteria, don't taste so great.
4. Whether this is true or not (I'm finding it hard to believe this personally), a cavity is basically a whole in your tooth, how can a hole be "brushed away"? Besides, I'd rather a trained and experienced dentist fix any cavities that I may have.
5. No offense Jay, but I think you may want to go see a dentist.
