Also, Russia's population is pretty small. 9th overall.

Re: Sterotypes
I understand the point you tried to make with this post but your example seems a bit off. You estimated that your area is 85% Asian and that 90% of the accidents involve Asians. That would be expected since there is such a high Asian population (and because you guessed at both of those figures, the fact that 90% is higher doesn't really matter).magneticgoop wrote:Stereotypes must be slightly true because they had to be true for a large number of a certain group for some time for them to become well known. For example the stereotype that Asians are bad drives i find to be quite true because I live in an area of San Diego with about 85% Asian population and 9 times out of ten that someone cuts you off or runs a stop sign is, you guessed it, Asians. now I don't think it has to do with race, i think it has to do with upbringing. Many of the drivers are first generation immigrants that's families never had cars and driving is a relatively new experience and the rules of the road aren't ingrained in them since the time they were born. So my point is are stereotypes completely wrong to assume?
Now if you came from an area with 10% Asians in the population and they were involved in 90% of the accidents, then it would appear that the stereotype has some truth to it.
Anyway, stereotypes are all generally based on fact which is why they are so common. However it is impossible to say that all people in a group act, think or look a certain way, so there will always be exceptions and that is when people get angry (because they are judged based on the actions of others and not themselves).
Hmm i don't wish to get involved too much in racial stereotypes but i have noticed that certain Nations have crazy drivers. Malaysia, Thailand.. but also the Italians and Portuguese are absolutely crackers.. they take more risks on the road .. of that i have no doubt.Neutrino wrote:Bah, I meant EU.
And I agree, steriotypes in general are crap. I have yet to see any that are accurate.
Even for the driving one: How can several billion people be predominantly bad drivers? Even if they had little experience with cars when they came to the US, they would quickly learn.
I think it's more an adaptation to their surroundings. Everyone around you drives badly, so you drive badly. Being Asian has nothing to do with it.
I don't think that stereotyping is always a bad thing; in a way all learning of any kind gives us prejudices towards certain ideas or 'truths'.
We just should use them as guides not absolutes.

India has the worst drivers. Firstly, you can just buy a drivers license, no need to pass a test. Also, their roads are in terrible conditions. No one actually bothers using traffic lights properly, the police break all the rules even if they are patrolling and not got their siren on, people always undertake and as well as overtaking. Its literally just a free for all on any road.muy_thaiguy wrote:No, if you want BAD drivers, go to Colorado, INCREDIBLY bad drivers there!jiminski wrote:Hmm i don't wish to get involved too much in racial stereotypes but i have noticed that certain Nations have crazy drivers. for me the Portuguese are mad drivers, sitting in the back of a taxi there is quite scary.

Oh-ho!
That'll be one of your posh, liberal friends who went to India for a gap year and taught English as a Foreign Language, and came back and said what such an enriching experience India was, but oh my, the poverty was heart-rending, and how because of what they saw they wanted to change the world, and is now working as a management consultant for McKinsey & Co.sam_levi_11 wrote:i know someone who went to india and say it was scary how the drivers were there

To pay penance, I'll buy twice as much Fair Trade chocolate as usual at the Co-Op for the whole of the next fortnight.

Re: Sterotypes
good point, maybe i should rephrase. probably only 10% are first generation immigrants but they account for about 90% of the traffic violations. but again i say it has nothing to do with race because many of the second, third, fourth ect generations drive just fine.sully800 wrote:I understand the point you tried to make with this post but your example seems a bit off. Fool me once, strike one. Fool me twice, strike...three.

The thing is goop, once you have that stereotype ingrained, whenever you see an Asian drive poorly, you will further substantiate that stereotype in your mind. Then when you see a WASP drive poorly, you'll just cuss them out and not think twice about it.
Also, I seriously doubt the validity of your made-up data regarding this. I work as a traffic engineer specializing in traffic crashes, and I know no gov't agency would publish that type of data, even though they do have it.

I dont get this, howd you know its the first gen. drivers which are causing the accidents, and not the 2nd +?magneticgoop wrote:good point, maybe i should rephrase. probably only 10% are first generation immigrants but they account for about 90% of the traffic violations. but again i say it has nothing to do with race because many of the second, third, fourth ect generations drive just fine.sully800 wrote:I understand the point you tried to make with this post but your example seems a bit off. was wondering too. and most asian countries do use bikes. most of china is rural, am i correct? its only in big cities do they have cars.Titanic wrote:I dont get this, howd you know its the first gen. drivers which are causing the accidents, and not the 2nd +?magneticgoop wrote:good point, maybe i should rephrase. probably only 10% are first generation immigrants but they account for about 90% of the traffic violations. but again i say it has nothing to do with race because many of the second, third, fourth ect generations drive just fine.sully800 wrote:I understand the point you tried to make with this post but your example seems a bit off.
