The Bible is Brutal

Even if you don't believe, the Bible makes a rather intriging read.
A few months ago I picked up my copy and flicked to a chapter which I have no hope remembering now. In it, it describes a group of people finding a man picking up logs on a Sunday. As this classifies as work, he had to be punished. Which was - believe it or not - death. Who gave the verdict? God himself. I am not joking. Who knows? Maybe the guy was collecting wood to build a fire for his cold family. Seems harsh, yes?
Any regular readers who know the chapter name and verse number for this little story?

According to Leviticus, if you raped a girl you had to pay her father a dowry and get married to her and you could never divorce.

Also, irony: Moses, who was saved from a pharoah who was killing all male children to ensure docility in the slaves, ended up killing all the males of some tribe that he ambushed. This was in like chapter thirty-something of Deuteronomy or one of those books near the start. I'm very sure it was before Judges.

Seems pretty fair to me, It's not like he wasn't warned.

So you are told, plainly to collect your wood for six days out of seven.

You must either be galacticly stupid or defiant to disobey that.

So either one is a pretty good reason to get voted out of the tribe. Use of rocks is a pretty good deterent for anyone thinking it's no biggy.

2 guys were living peacefully on a plain under the sun. One day, one of them killed the other with a bloody nailed stick, finishing him off by bitting him with a snake. He also placed caterpillars in his wounds.

I'll say that was brutal, even if the first part was peaceful. Makes sense? yes it does.

And I'll gather wood on sunday anytime......Cause if I ever have to gather wood, it's for an emergency anyway.

Now we all know that the Biblical Sabbath was Saturday and that it was changed to Sunday (apparently to apease the still majority pagans) by Constantine and ever since has been the Christian day of worship. Given this why dont Fundamentalist Christians worship on Saturday as opposed to the arbituary day that has no biblical foundation. Im not asking this to be provocative,I am simply puzzled because it doesnt add up when you consider that large parts of the Old Testament are accepted without question.

You're assuming I'd call the Bible peaceful, or even describe it with any adj. like that... I don't. It's just a book or collection of books in and of itself. Parts of it are brutal or wise, but not as a whole.
