Did Lincoln personally get himself and his buddies rich by freeing the slaves?

Was he a convicted felon? A philanderer? Did he make fun of disabled people as part of his campaign?

I think the comparison ends at 'they were both deeply unpopular'

"The Emancipation Proclamation completely repudiates all of those previous ideas for Lincoln," says Foner. "[The abolishment of slavery is] immediate, not gradual. There is no mention of compensation and there is nothing in it about colonization. After the Emancipation Proclamation, Lincoln says nothing publicly about colonization."

Confederate History--Dispelling the Myths...
Post by ConfederateSS » Sun Jul 26, 2015 8:04 am
(...)

MYTH--Abraham Lincoln was The Great Emancipator.
FACT--While Lincoln has went down in history as the Great Emancipator, many would not care to hear his real thoughts on people of color. Martyred President Abraham Lincoln was fervently making plans to send all freed slaves to the jungles of Central America once the War was over. Knowing that African Society would never allow he slaves to return back to Africa,Lincoln also did not want the slaves in the US. He thought the jungles of Central America would be the best solution and conductive to the freed slaves best interest. The only thing that kept this from happening, was his assassination.
The article cited by Apatheist repudiates the statement about Lincoln and basically calls the view of Confedss as a MYTH.

It makes sense that Lincoln's view on Slavery evolved as did that of the Nation.

and MORE from the SAME article:
He said he couldn't remember when he didn't think that way — and there's no reason to doubt the accuracy or sincerity of that statement," explains historian Eric Foner. "The problem arises with the next question: What do you do with slavery, given that it's unjust? Lincoln took a very long time to try to figure out exactly what steps ought to be taken."

Foner traces the evolution of Lincoln's thoughts on slavery in The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery. He explains how Lincoln's changing thoughts about slavery — and the role of freed slaves — mirrored America's own transformation. (...)

Foner traces how Lincoln first supported this kind of colonization — the idea that slaves should be freed and then encouraged or required to leave the United States — for well over a decade. Like Henry Clay, Lincoln also supported repealing slavery gradually — and possibly compensating slave owners for their losses after slaves were freed.

It was not until the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared the freedom of all slaves and then named 10 specific states where the law would take effect, that Lincoln publicly rejected his earlier views.

Quoting what Lincoln said publicly and early about what to do with Freed Slaves is NOT an accurate portrayal of what Lincoln thought as he led the US Military in its fight against the Confederate States of America and to the demolition of the institution of Slavery.

more:
However, despite fears to the contrary, in the fall of 1864, Lincoln won a resounding re-election, and with that momentum behind him, he endorsed the proposed amendment as the only way to "meet and cover all cavils" about the abolition of slavery.[3] In his December 1864 annual message to Congress, he called for "reconsideration and passage" of James Ashley’s "proposed amendment of the Constitution, abolishing slavery throughout the United States."[4] And when Ashley moved reconsideration on January 6, 1865, Lincoln went to work, dangling rewards and twisting congressional arms, until on January 31, the reconsideration squeaked through the House by seven votes.[5]
https://www.gilderlehrman.org/history-r ... -amendment

and MORE, from AI Summary:
What was lincoln's role in the thirteenth amendment?

Abraham Lincoln played a crucial role in the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, which abolished slavery in the United States.

Advocacy for the Amendment

Lincoln recognized that the Emancipation Proclamation, issued in 1863, did not permanently abolish slavery; only a constitutional amendment could achieve that.

He made the amendment a central part of his 1864 campaign platform, advocating for its passage as essential to ensure the freedom of enslaved people.

Political Strategy

Lincoln employed a combination of public appeals and private negotiations to garner support for the amendment in Congress.
He worked diligently to secure the necessary votes, emphasizing the moral and political imperative of ending slavery.
Outcome and Legacy

The House of Representatives passed the amendment on January 31, 1865, after it had already been approved by the Senate.
Lincoln did not live to see the amendment ratified; he was assassinated just months before its final approval.

ConfedSS missed a key point: Colonization in this context is CLEARLY linked to Deportation, forced or not.
Foner traces how Lincoln first supported this kind of colonization — the idea that slaves should be freed and then encouraged or required to leave the United States — for well over a decade.

To answer the OP - strikes a deal for diesel with a tyrant against whom he's supposed to have trading sanctions, thereby funding his war machine and efforts to destroy Ukraine, which pretty much everyone else in the world believes to be wrong.

It's just another empty announcement. In Oct their deal is for 18min worth of US diesel consumption, in Nov its for 24 minutes worth. Theres a reason the deal is in tons and not barrels, it's more kabuki/bukkake theater

that's .0004% of monthly consumption for Oct, it doesn't move the needle for either country.

It's still an increase of 33% at a time when it should be decreasing to zero. It's sending entirely the wrong message, especially since the "reason" for it seems to be a hissy fit. This is not statesmanlike behaviour.

What a stupid move by Trump.
Some facts:
Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis for Gas Buddy, predicted that the agreement could result in a short-term reduction of 10 to 20 cents for a gallon of diesel. However, he said it will be "difficult to achieve" Trump's import goals.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/pol ... 175046007/

and
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said he has struck a deal to obtain diesel from Russia, a stunning reversal of years of U.S. pressure on Moscow over its war with Ukraine and an attempt to address high fuel prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.

Trump said on social media on Friday that he struck the deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a phone call in which he was expected to discuss a suspected case of plague in Russia. Instead, Trump announced that Russia will immediately supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel, followed by an additional 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons "immediately thereafter." Russia will deliver an additional 3 million tons "within a short period of time" after that, he wrote.
https://www.npr.org/2026/10/09/nx-s1-59 ... e-midterms

and more:
In the simplest terms, this is not enough diesel to move the fuel gauge at all, much less lower diesel prices globally, or just the U.S. for that matter. According to the International Energy Agency the world consumes 855 million barrels of diesel per month, or just under 115 million metric tons. That means the 300,000 tons for the month of October would be enough diesel for about 11 minutes a day of consumption. To put it another way it would represent about 5% of what the U.S. exports daily.

In other bits of stupidity, Trump withdraws the (small and relatively cheap) force in Iraq, handing control of the country to Iran, whom he claims to oppose.

https://theconversation.com/americas-fi ... ran-293053
The last of the US-led coalition forces are leaving Iraq. It’s a significant bonus for Iran. The withdrawal date, September 30, was also the date by which Baghdad had pledged to bring numerous powerful Iran-backed militias under state control. But this deadline looks certain to be missed.

This effectively means that, at a moment when Washington is engaged in a costly conflict intended to weaken Iran militarily and economically, it is simultaneously reducing its military presence in the country that has arguably provided Tehran with its greatest strategic gain of the post-Saddam era.

Iraq has its own powerful nationalist instincts and has repeatedly tried to balance both US and Iranian influence and steer its own path. But the US withdrawal now risks removing an important counterweight to Iran, leaving Tehran with a great deal of sway in Iraq’s political and economic affairs

I don't really understand where you are coming from, after 6 years in office at what point has Trump behaved like a statesman?

This amounts to an attempt at looking like he's doing something about fuel prices, a 'headline' grab a month before an important US election. That's the only message Trump cares about and the only one anyone should expect of him.

He can't keep Ukraine from bombing Russian oil infrastructure, he's completely lost control in the middle east. He's grasping at straws looking for wins right now, he truly doesn't give any fucks what message he's sending to his 'allies' by making a BS deal like this.

I say this more to convince those who think he's the "best president ever".
I give him credit for getting to talk to Kim Jong Un, although I'm not sure how effective that was in the long term. Certainly nothing in the second term has been much less than embarrassing.
