Looks like nothing has changed…

Post by jimboston »

Looks like this forum hasn’t changed much since I last popped in.

Any new interesting personalities? Any “new” people who are really known people who’ve been banned?

A quick scan looks like the same BS.

I'm afraid your job of 'shouting at jpf' has been taken over by an unpaid intern.

Are they really “Gamestop” anymore? Don’t they now make all their money off investing their cash reserves into the AI Bubble?

You're pretty much right on the money of it being the same, except with less engagement, a love affair between J4 and PackRat, and more unhinged garbage spewed from the usual people that are so far right or left, they've entered into space.

Thank you for the opportunity to turn this further into a thread about Gamestop.

As far as I am aware they have no money invested in AI, a super tiny amount of bitcoin, and about 8-9% of Ebay.

Collectables are replacing hardware sales. Ebay is the king of online collectable sales. We'll see what happens.

One must admit that you (and others) did well with the Gamestop move.

Didn’t “change the market” for the long term, and didn’t work with BBY…but that stock has done well.

What do you think of Kalshi and Polymarket?

Didn't realize Gamestop is still a thing or much to talk about compared to the more egregious crap that's been peddling around.

I think they are only going to get bigger and bigger unless the gov't decides to regulate, which they should, but they won't under this admin.

I haven't used them much lately, I used polymarket a bunch 4-6 years ago when it was small. I don't have alot of faith that common sense rules are coming when we do get rules but it's getting out of hand. George Santos is thriving though, he lives for times like this.

The “Insider Trading” that’s happening is crazy.

That said, if you’re smart and are “On It” constantly there’s definitely a way to make some $.

But like... does it even fit the legal definition of insider trading? As companies they could try banning people but it's totally unclear if it's even illegal, if these are 'public securities', if anyone has 'fiduciary responsibilities' when it's just an individual placing 'bets' on their own actions.

I love gambling, and flirted with a career as a poker player when I was younger but the coming generations are so fucked with all the gambling being shoved down their throats right now. POTUS was just promoting 'Stake' on his social media account, a online casino marketed at the US audience based in curacao that hold no US licenses to operate but the internet is gonna internet.

Conceptually I love the idea of polymarket as like the ultimate bookie where you can 'check the odds' on anything and get honest picture but the reality is in their current form it's so fucking bad for society lol. I do agree though, if you are smart, fast and can read tea leaves (or enlist AI help to predict short term futures) there is alot of money to be made.

Didn't the US ban online poker because of the money ending up abroad? There was a boom in poker about 10-15 years ago, WSOP was on tv, there were celebrity versions, but I don't see it these days, perhaps because the government effectively pulled the plug.

There’s several different subjects and/or potential problems you bring up… some are similar to the standard securities markets, but (as you say) there are differences and potential “abuses”…

- politicians or celebrities making public statements to “drive” the market, then making “trades” or having people close to them making trades.
- people in power actually making decisions based on “the market” and making bets (or again having people make bets).
- sports abuses, from athletes or coaches or other insiders.
- gov’t people or military people making “trades” based on secret insider knowledge.

There was a story about some politician withdrawing from an election, and these markets… there was no evidence that this politician had abused the market, but the story basically pointed out the fact that there was a “market” that existed asking if he would withdraw by X date. The story noted that under current law there would nothing illegal if he had made a bet saying he’d withdraw by X date… then actual doing that, thus guaranteeing his ‘bet’ would pay off.

That might not be illegal, but it seems to me that it should be…
