Should a memorial day be "happy"? Armistice Day (11 November) is a sombre and reflective affair for us.

It's funny. The Yankee's Memorial Day isn't the actual date of anything. They picked the day because they were jealous that we had Victoria Day and we didn't. Except they screwed up the date, so it only falls on Victoria Day one year out of every seven.

Not sure the Americans would be too bothered about celebrating a British monarch...although Confed might like to join in, as she did support their rights to fight. There has been a suggestion that she supported the confederacy, although stronger rumours that she was anti-slavery and her public stance was entirely neutral.

America the Beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed His grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Trump says those who died were suckers and losers.

In 2023, retired four-star Marine General John F. Kelly, who served as Trump's White House Chief of Staff, went on the record to confirm the remarks were made.

I do not think any one nation or people has a monopoly on grieving for their Dead and Fallen, in War or Peace. Before there was an official memorial day of any sort, widows and family of dead soldiers placed flowers on the graves of their loved ones. There is a desire to remember the Dead, especially if that person was very close to those left behind. This is not just true for the War Dead, and parents do grieve for children they must bury, at any age.

There is evidence that prehistoric men and women grieved for their Dead, based on items found at ancient burial sites.

So remember and Honor the Fallen, from whichever nation, and whichever date that official celebration occurs. The United States has chosen and designated the last Monday in May for that time of Honor. And one can do so privately, too, at any time.

from Wikipedia:
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.[1][2] It is observed on the last Monday of May.
