Alright, I gave in and looked it up. Apparently it's the directory assistance phone number, and is American slang for relevant information, details, or gossip.
Meaningless outside of the USA because a) it's not that phone number and b) the rest of the world would write it as 11/4.
Apparently 420 is to do with marijuana use - nothing to be proud of for the approximate 22% of Americans who do, which is more than treble the UK use and four times the global average...and these are people who have guns...
The only date that has any wider resonance that I'm aware of is Star Wars day, and that's because it doesn't use numbers.

The way of writing dates isn't metric - officially the metric way is YYYY-MM-DD.
May the 4th works because we say it that way, it's the illogical way you write it that's the problem.
As for checking Americans - what's the name of the language that you speak (more or less)?
Given recent behaviour, the one thing Americans do need is checking - in the sense of "keeping in check" .
