Donald Trump has called on other countries to send ships to help reopen the strait of Hormuz, the critical chokepoint for global oil supplies which Iran has closed to almost all shipping in retaliation for the joint US-Israeli offensive launched two weeks ago.

In the latest flurry of social media posts, Trump wrote on Saturday on Truth Social that “many countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe.”

The US president, seemingly in an attempt to bolster domestic and international support for the war, added: “Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint, will send Ships to the area.”

Poor Trumpy-wumpy. Starts a war which destablizes the region, then begs other countries (most of which he regularly insults) to come and stabilize it for him.

So putting aside the words of the least trustworthy information disseminator head of state, you should expect most of these countries to do exactly what he's 'asking' them to do. They were always going to do it out of self interest, and he's just doing what he does best... take credit for things.

I'm inclined to agree that they all want to do that and, if they had the resources, would do that.

However, who actually has the ability to deploy ships at that distance? China and Russia, both of whom aren't at any oil risk. France, whose nuclear industry gives it more breathing room.

So that leaves the UK, and maybe Germany and Italy? Will it be enough?

Yeah, it's possible, I guess.

But I do read about Iran letting tankers go by with Indian Navy escorts. While they are striking out in many directions, they obviously have a soft spot for India. I suspect China, too. China is refusing to send military hardware right now, but it is sending food. They might be willing to co-operate with China. The Russians, I'm not so sure. Iran is traditionally a Russian ally, but Putin is currently making more money with Trump's lifting of sanctions, so he might not be inclined to piss off Trump. Still, I don't think Russia would actually attack Iran.

So, if you rule out Russia, China, and India, that leaves only the European navies, which have been allowed to wither for decades. And Japan, which might conceivably get involved.

idk how much it really matters who goes when it comes to the success rate... it's going to be done and for the foreseeable future starting in the coming weeks after they do some work clearing out mines, 'they' are going to be escorting tankers with a very high success rate at great expense and at much slower rates than before. As with all american foreign wars in my lifetime, they will achieve their short term objectives. Can they avoid doing the other part they've done with every foreign war in my lifetime by staying too long trying to rebuild a stable government that supports their interest and then leave as losers?

Are we going to be escorting tankers for the coming decade? Will America try taking over and creating a permanent outpost on Kharg Island? Are we all going to wake up in 3 weeks to trump saying we accomplished our objectives and are all forces out of the area? if he does will Israel follow suit or continue bombing? Will business as usual ever resume in the straight? Will Clavicular be Iran's next supreme leader by March 31st?

If true, this would be a significantly bigger defeat for the U.S. than the last giant defeat (five years ago). The strait was open last month.

Once the U.S. begins full retreat, we will have spent $100 billion, had 13 bases leveled, and be in a worse position than when we started.
