Canada halts assisted suicide program for mentally ill due to lack of doctors

The law was expanded in 2021 to include people experiencing "grievous and irremediable" conditions, such as depression and other mental health issues.

Our "lack of Doctors" is a bit exaggerated.

Yes. Good Doctors sometimes move to other countries, mainly the United States for better pay. We get plenty of them from other countries for the exact same reason. Also, It can be difficult to find a family doctor you like that stays in one location.

No. You don't have people dying because they were riding around in an ambulance unable to find any Doctors to provide medical assistance.

Anyways, there's way more important issues here than assisted suicide. Do you prefer Rosa Laricchiuta or Darby Mills?

The intersection between depression and making life ending decisions seems a ruff time to make a decision. Would the doctor try to end the depression first or just go with the patients request?

You didn't answer my question but fine, I can write some more stuff to address yours...

That's going to depend on the Doctor. However you couldn't just drop in to any clinic any afternoon and get offed. There was likely a reasonably long (possibly in some opinions an unreasonably long) process involved. Plus there would be limited locations, potentially a wait list.

Was the "halted program" available outside Ontario? I am not even aware of anyone that knows someone that used it. "Canada" in the article, as is typical, may have been used instead of some hospitals in Toronto.

Speaking of Toronto, Annie "Holly" Woods was also excellent. Plus I declare it on topic, since she moved to Atlanta. A huge factor in our critical 1980s female rock star shortage.

I remember this being a goofball issue with someone else and got their facts wrong. So what's the issue now? You don't like people choosing to end their own life? Get over it.

That's a serious distortion of the facts, wrong on several counts. Basically they are taking two separate and unrelated issues and trying to make them part and parcel of the same thing, which they are not.

1. The Medical Assistance in Dying program (or MAID) isn't being halted by any means. It continues as before. What has been halted is the planned expansion into allowing MAID for people with mental conditions. We have allowed MAID for people with terminal illnesses for a long time, and that will not change. There was a planned expansion of the program for people with untreatable depression and other mental illnesses. That planned expansion was first postponed about two years ago due to political opposition in the Senate. Since then, political opposition has grown, on many sides. On the right, you have conservatives and religious people who are against assisted suicide by any means. On the left, you have victims' advocacy groups who see MAID for mental patients as a cynical attempt by the government to cheaply dispose of problem patients that might otherwise require decades of expensive therapy.

With many groups on both left and right opposing the expansion, the government really didn't have any political allies in favour of the expansion. So, first they postponed it for a few months until 2023, then they postponed it for another year until 2024, and now it's been postponed indefinitely.

2. There is a doctor shortage in Canada. Just like every other Western country, we have an aging population and the dominant cadre among doctors, just like in every other profession, is retiring. And, just like most other Western countries, we've tried to counterbalance our aging population with rapid immigration. The immigrants themselves include many doctors, but the local authorities won't recognize their foreign credentials, so they end up working as hospital orderlies or whatever while they go through the Byzantine requirements to get their credentials recognized. Meanwhile, many people don't have a regular family doctor.

Canada is hardly unique in this problem. I saw it firsthand with my grandfather. When we first got out of Czechoslovakia in 1968, I went to Canada to live with my parents but my grandfather went to Germany. Back home in Czechoslovakia he had been a cardiovascular specialist, an expert in his field, a published author. He thought any German hospital would be glad to have him, but in fact the German authorities said his medical degree was worthless because it wasn't in German, this despite the fact that he had published postdoctoral research in his name that had been translated into German journals. They insisted that he had to rewrite all his exams in German, and he never quite managed it. Ended up working for minimum wage as a research assistant in a clinic. So this is not a new story or a uniquely Canadian one. Eventually the new immigrant doctors will work their way through the system, but it will take a decade, and meanwhile a, yes, doctor shortage does continue.

3. (2) above has absolutely nothing to do with (1). The MAID program is run by nurses, not doctors. There are a handful of doctors in the system as consultants, but overwhelmingly 99% of the consults and procedures are carried out by nurses only. Fox News is doing its usual job of making connections between unrelated subjects for political propaganda purposes.

Absolutely pleased that they are ceasing MAID for mental ailments.
It was thoughtless at best, and downright evil at worst.

If someone is so depressed they are considering jumping off a bridge, you talk them down so they can get better, not give them a government funded push.
I admit, young mothers suffering from postpartum depression can be a bit annoying at times, but I certainly don't support legalizing their demise.

Glad this was ultimately changed.

This article is ready for the loon-y bin..
He told Fox News Digital in an email that he encountered the bird four years ago and took shots from a distance of what he initially thought was a white-and-gray loon.

What's he talking about. It IS a white-and-gray loon!!!

Yes, paler than a typical loon, but it is not entirely white... and whether it is the same one after four years sounds like only a guess.

Flying into kamloops and I'm going to lake Shushwap area in BC, and will be on the lookout for tacotime for some mexifries.

I'm organizing a campaign to ship canadians into battleground states to vote illegally for Biden and ironically legitimize the illegals are committing election fraud claims but doing with it with the whitest people this side of iceland. All of it paid for by DJT crypto coin profits.

Then we are going to spend Canada day mourning the loss of lord stanleys cup to fucking florida after coming closer than they have in 30 years to returning the cup to its rightful home country.

Then I gotta stop off at the post office and ship Saxi 50 boxes of cuban cigars

...Then I'm gonna play some golf and maybe take the baby to the donkey refuge to keep her entertained.

I'm heading to Vegas like directly after to be there for the 4th which is going to be hot as balls but hopefully will be a good show. Really really wanted to take baby to the Dead show at the sphere but appears wifey is veto-ing the idea because apparently this would make us bad parents

Donkey farm, is that anywhere near the place with the kangaroos?

I think the kangaroos were in Kelowna, definately near it.

There's a parrot, cockatoo and other bird, rescue place near summerland but it's kind of sad and you get a lecture, about where the birds are from and how terrible people are for buying birds on the way in. I think it's called bird island. It's a sparse concrete building not an island.

Edit-1 https://www.parrotisland.net

Edit-2 Funny, I was wrong on parrot island in peachland but right about the kangaroos in Kelowna. https://www.kangaroocreekfarm.com

Edit-3 https://tacotimecanada.com

Figured I'd add that since there's a "locations" section.

Thanks for the tips!

this is the donkey place, it's very close to where we are staying so we are certain to visit even if it's hard to get excited about donkeys. The Kangaroo thing is a little farther but could be winner too...

We loved the kangaroos, there are sugar gliders and other cool critters too.

I liked parrot island because of the birds but as I said, it's a bit of a bummer. So I can't highly recommend a visit there.

Red Robins in Vernon was excellent too. I probably should be cautious about that suggestion since it was 2018. Might not be as stellar as it was then.

Donkey refuge looks ok. We would check that out if we were in the area.
