UPDATE 4 - Democratic Party thought leader Ken Burns just said sending immigrants to a luxury resort island in Massachusetts is equivalent to the Holocaust.

(And they wonder why no one takes them seriously when they scream our democracy is under threat.)

UPDATE 5 - Barely 24 hours after just fifty (50!) migrants arrived on the luxury resort island of Martha's Vineyard - a holiday island for billionaire Democrats that they recently virtue signaled was a migrant sanctuary community - Massachusetts has mobilized its National Guard and is rounding the migrants up and moving them off island. They're being sent to Camp Edwards, a dreary military compound surrounded by 12-feet tall razor-wire topped fences.

Ron De Santis - sends migrants to a luxury resort island.

ITT - I learned Saxi supports flying illegals to luxury resorts using tax payer money.

12m spent to fly 50 people to Marthas. That's $240,000 per person vacation... DeSantis is a republican so he's 'fiscally responsible'

At first I thought… this is a win-win! Martha’s Vineyard and The Cape (otherwise know as Cape Cod to non-New Englanders) has been experiencing a shortage of low-wage workers for the past couple years. Wouldn’t people be able to start doing that work until they could get settled or demonstrate other skills?

Then I realized it’s September and the locals on The Cape and Martha’s Vineyard really don’t want or need lots of extra people down there. If they were dropped in May it’d be easier. ;)

Interesting fact… Chappaquiddick Island is a separate island (as it’s surrounded by water)… but it’s really “part of” Martha’s Vineyard. Anyway… Chappaquiddick is where former longtime Senator Edward (“Ted” or “Teddy”) Kennedy committed Vehicular Homicide w/OUI and got away without any prosecution. His only “punishment” was that he never got “his turn” at being President like his older brother JFK.

Your post made me look for some proof, and it turn out I'm wrong on the details and happy to admit that. Desantis has 12m earmarked in his budget to "transport illegal immigrants to sanctuary destinations," but it's unclear how much of those funds were spent on this specific event. We could be in for more stunts if there are remaining funds. The earmark is only good for this budget cycle.

It is confirmed however that Greg Abbot spend 12 million (so far) to BUS 9,000 migrants to DC and NY.

How much does the FEDERAL government spend to do the SAME?

To ship ILLEGAL aliens all over the USA? And to run Courts to hear their cases? And to track Illegals who fail to show for their Court dates? and to House and Feed them while they wait for assistance from non-profits and NGOs?

I estimate that it is at least $1 BILLION. And Kamala claims the borders are secure. RIGHT. I am glad she is not in charge of secure borders at the White House or the US Congress.

Texas sends two buses of migrants to vice president's residence in Washington

https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/15/us/migrants-kamala-harris-house-dc/index.html

(NewsNation) — After Vice President Kamala Harris twice declared the southern border was “secure” during an interview on “Meet the Press” on Sunday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) came out Wednesday refuting that claim.

Contrary to Harris’ prognosis, DHS sources confirmed Wednesday that more than 560,000 undocumented individuals have successfully evaded law enforcement this fiscal year, not including hundreds of thousands who surrendered to Border Patrol agents.

It’s the people evading authorities that Blake Masters, a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in Arizona, says he is most concerned about.

“The getaways — that’s what keeps me up at night,” Masters said while speaking with NewsNation’s “Rush Hour” on Wednesday.

Way to address the issue at hand JP4...

Blaming Kamala who basically has no power at all in regards to the budget or passing immigration reform or border security issues. Seems like a convenient target for you.

You say it isn't Trumps fault (which i agree with)... so why is it Kamalas fault? At what point was Kamala involved in writing or voting for any of the laws that spend what you claim is a billion dollars moving hundreds of thousands of people around the country and through court expenditures. She never held a federal house or senate seat. Vice presidents are figure heads at best, and she hasn't cast a tiebreaking vote on anything related to border security in her time as VP.

What about the governors doing this? Do you have any comment on the actual issue, or just sticking with blame shifting?

12,000,000/9,000 = $1,333 per migrant

CATO, which is pro-immigration, deconstructed a FAIR analysis to conclude that illegal immigration costs state/local government ~$4500 per immigrant, per year. That would be $22,500 over a five year period.

In other words, by investing $12 MM to transfer the costs of illegal immigration to New York and D.C., Abbott has just saved Texans $3,167 per illegal immigrant over the next 12 months, or $21,167 over five years.

Seems like a good deal to me. Funny how Northern states are so clamorous about immigrants until they're asked to actually pay some of the expenses border states have been unilaterally shouldering in the absence of Federal support.

Democrats want the "trash" (their word for Hispanic immigrants) dumped in border states where the little people they despise will have to deal with it and pay for it. They don't want it on their luxury resort islands.

Not big hearted, just garden variety NIMBYs.

This is why Democrats always end up losing. They have no idea how to seize an opportunity.

It's true that this is an obvious publicity stunt by the deSantis and company. But whining about it just makes the Democrats seem pathetic and somewhat hypocritical.

Democrats in power in northern cities and states should be proudly taking in all the migrants deSantis can send them. They should fight for quick approvals of their refugee claims, then sponsor apprenticeships for everyone eligible, and then run a reality TV show that shows off what happens when these highly motivated hardworking people are injected into America's labour shortage.

DeSantis has sent them potentially a very powerful gift. But they are letting it become a liability.

As Saxi pointed out, they can't be legally employed which greatly limits alot of your suggestions. As far as giving these people refuge status or otherwise making some broad stroke special status would almost certainly be more damaging than helpful with the upcoming elections. Democrats really just need to shut when republicans try and change the subject with stunts like this. Then revert back to talking about Abortion rights in 5 days when the hoopla dies down, cus that is how they are going to keep winning

I guess in the short term you're right.

I'm thinking more about the long term. I don't particularly care about who wins what elections as long as xenophobia and nationalism is squelched and immigrants get the respect they deserve.

Why The U.S. Government Is Dropping Off Migrants In Rural Arizona Towns

Drive west 100 miles from Tucson, Ariz., across the rugged and mountainous Sonoran Desert, and Highway 86 starts getting more potholed and narrow as you get close to the old copper mining town of Ajo.

Here, off the historic Ajo Plaza with its ornate Spanish colonial buildings, a pair of white U.S. Border Patrol vans pulls into a dusty alley, already hot even on an early April afternoon.

Two agents hop out, slide open the doors, and families with children pile out. They look exhausted and stressed. One woman limps as she picks up her suitcase and a plastic bag with bed sheets. A volunteer with an ad hoc group of local humanitarians then quickly ushers them inside a small gym they've converted to an improvised shelter, where they're handed water and told where they are.

Most have no idea. They've just been released from detention.

"Border Patrol drops them off here in town, where else can they go?" asks Jose Castillo, who's helping as an interpreter. "It's like me taking you all the way to China, drop you in the middle of town, what are you gonna do?"
(...)

One woman and her young son are literally just getting reunited with their confiscated belts and shoelaces. The young boy tries to lace his shoes while his mom, crying, makes her first phone call in days letting a loved one know they're safe.

'Rural releases'

All of this is the immediate aftermath of a controversial practice known as "rural releases" that the U.S. government began doing in the borderlands last month.

The Border Patrol, which did not respond to NPR's requests for an on the record interview, says the pandemic is limiting how many people they can safely hold at nearby facilities. Officials say funding and jurisdiction issues are also mostly preventing them from transporting migrants to cities. So in practice, that means migrants who do qualify for potential asylum and can prove they have sponsors in the U.S. are just being dropped in rural Arizona towns like Ajo that are close to overflowing Border Patrol facilities.

There is no public transportation here, let alone even a local government. Ajo is unincorporated. So for now, the burden is mostly on private donors and volunteers like Castillo.

"When somebody needs help, that's what we're here for," Castillo says. The 82-year-old has spent most of his life in Ajo, working at the copper mine until it closed in 1983. His family lived on both sides of the border where migrants have crossed for generations, he says, looking for work or fleeing bad situations in their home countries.

(...)

Since the rural releases began March 18, there hasn't been a single overnight stay by migrants here. And the cadre of volunteers, coordinated by a local environmental and economic development nonprofit, has found a daily rhythm. They get a heads-up text from officials at the local Border Patrol station 10 miles away, then head down to the plaza to help.

It's just not sustainable, says Jose Castillo, the interpreter.

"My way of seeing things, this is not Ajo's problem, this is the government's problem," he says. "They created it, they own it."

ALSO:

A majority of Americans see an 'invasion' at the southern border, NPR poll finds
August 18, 2022

More than half of Americans say there's an "invasion" at the southern border, according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll, part of a broader decline in support for immigrants overall.

The poll also found that large numbers of Americans hold a variety of misconceptions about immigrants — greatly exaggerating their role in smuggling illegal drugs into the U.S., and how likely they are to use public benefits, for example — as false and misleading claims about immigration gain traction.

Republicans are more likely to hold negative views of immigrants. But the poll found they're not alone in embracing increasingly extreme rhetoric around immigration.

"Invasion" rhetoric is resonating with many Americans

The poll found that a majority of Americans — including three-quarters of Republicans — say it's either somewhat or completely true that the United States is "experiencing an invasion" at the southern border.

I think this story supports Duk's point about hard working immigrants. There is little doubt in my mind of the hard work done by many immigrants. I have met many of them personally. I speak to them. They go to my church and they come to get help at the Food Pantry (Food Bank) at which I volunteer to assist the needy.

Unskilled Jobs Draw Migrants, Changing Face Of Small Towns Across America

(...)

Workers on the "kill floor" make $15-$20 an hour. The chain moves fast — a single cutter may process 100 carcasses an hour. In a single eight-hour shift, three workers will butcher 2,500 animals.

"It's hard, and it's also dangerous," says Sylvia Hernandez, a U.S. resident from Chihuahua, Mexico, who has worked at JBS for 10 years and is studying for the citizenship test. "The kill floor is covered with blood, suet, fat, water."

In 2006, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided the plant, then owned by Swift & Co., and arrested 300 unauthorized workers. The plant, now owned by JBS — the Brazilian multinational meat processor — says it carefully vets applicants to ensure a legal workforce.

"Historically, first-generation Americans, asylees and refugees have viewed our jobs as unique opportunities to pursue the American dream and provide a better future for their families," JBS says in an emailed statement.

That’s what many cities have done… particularly New York.

Martha’s Vineyard was a stunt.

Yeah there are empty cottages… many are not properly “winterized”.
Many places on the Cape and MV drain the water from the pipes, shut off electricity, etc. when Summer Ends and Tourism stops.

Plus there are No Jobs on MV. There’s no industry to speak of outside Tourism.

Additionally, because it’s an Island, all food and supplies must be shipped over… which makes it more expensive to feed and clothe these people.

Also because the year-round population of the Island is so small other resources, like education and legal services, are not available.

It was definitely a stunt, and a great stunt at that…because he knew the Island couldn’t support these people.

se is a typo of we…. I would think Captain Obvious would be able to figure that out since it’s well… so obvious.

Apparently you’ve never made a typo.

It’s kinda funny that you obsess over my typo’s. Keep it up. It;s fine.
It doesn’t bother me. I have thick fingers and type on an iPad.

This site, and my responses to you, aren’t so important that I feel the need to go back and correct a typo when my finger hits the semicolon button instead of the apostrophe button, or when I hit the wrong letter and autocorrect doesn’t catch it. It’s really not that important and I know it’s a reflection of nothing other except maybe the fact that I have thick fingers and I don;t care that much.

Going back to your “estimate” of “at least $1 BILLION’.

So this figure is based on your “knowledge of many issues”?
OK, so you have detailed knowledge of Federal expenditures related to immigration control.

Trying to claim this number is based on your “knowledge of many issues” just makes you look more stupid than you already look.
(Which is kinda impressive.)
