I recently saw the classic Phileas Fogg adventure advertised on TV and it got me thinking ā āI bet someone has already done this on CC beforeā. Turns out nobody is foolish enough to attempt to do it. Not that I could find, anyway. I digress.... Never one to shirk a challenge, I thought I would try.
The story starts in London on Wednesday, 2 October 1872. Phileas Fogg is a wealthy English gentleman living a solitary life. Despite his wealth, Fogg lives a modest life with habits carried out with mathematical precision. Very little can be said about his social life other than that he is a member of the Reform Club, where he spends the best part of his days. Having dismissed his former valet, James Forster, for bringing him shaving water two degrees too cold (at 29 Ā°C (84 Ā°F) instead of 30 Ā°C (86 Ā°F)), Fogg hires Frenchman Jean Passepartout as a replacement. At the Reform Club, Fogg gets involved in an argument over an article in The Daily Telegraph stating that with the opening of a new railway section in India, it is now possible to travel around the world in 80 days. He accepts a wager for Ā£20,000 (approximately Ā£2.3 million in 2020),[4][5] half of his total fortune, from his fellow club members to complete such a journey within this time period. With Passepartout accompanying him, Fogg departs from London by train at 8:45 p.m. on 2 October; in order to win the wager, he must return to the club by this same time on 21 December 80 days later. They take the remaining Ā£20,000 of Fogg's fortune with them to cover expenses during the journey.
So, can we replicate the challenge by playing 80 maps in 80 days? More to the point, can I be bothered to create 20+ games everyday for the thick end of 3 months. We can but try. The game will follow a route from London around the world back to England. It will be a different route to Fogg, of course, as he didnāt even leave the northern hemisphere. But it is a route, nonetheless, scattered with the odd Rail map (this all started with the Railway back in 1872 after all)
I am looking for at least 40 Travellers who will play a range of 1 v 1, Poly2, Poly3 & Poly4 depending on map size. I believe the more players the more skill, so you will get 1 point for a 1 v 1 victory, 2 for P2, 3 for P3, 4 for P4.
Final League Position will be split by number of wins on P4, followed by P3, P2. If by some freak of nature it is still tied, then a game on world 2:1 P4 will conclude things once and for all. At the end of 80 games, we will have a final league table and a prize to boot (sadly not Ā£20,000, but something is better than nothing).
Each map you will play a random opponent. The list will be randomised for each. 1 game. No spoils, chained, fog**, 20 round limit.
**This is a polite request to allow the one joining second the opportunity to see the board either through message, waiting 12 hours or posting what you took and saw. I will not enforce any ruling, so sort it out amongst yourself. As such, there is no fog rule, just that I would prefer you to observe it. ITāS POLITE, DAMN IT!
* Itās a long journey and we may lose people along the way. If someone drops out, I will draft in a reserve. To keep pace with the itinerary, a couple of players may get a bye for a round or two. These lucky players will be the fortunate recipient of a free win. This cannot be helped. * Due to game load, Premium only. Your finishing position will score points towards the TPA title. * If for some reason, I cannot keep pace, then you may get two games one day. Thatās life. Iām sure Fogg didnāt have it all plain sailing for his journey. * I will no doubt remember things, so rules may alter before we kick off. For now, please join the challenge by signing up belowā¦.
