3 countries most likely to merge
Under one government. Germany was formed from many nation states as was Italy. Could this happen in the future? What are your 3 or more current counties likely to unite under one government? Some might share a common language or religion, as Italy, or not. In the case of Italy the North was more industrial and the south the breadbasket.

Re: 3 countries most likely to merge
I think some Central or South American countries could/would most likely benefit from a merge.
I don’t think they can do it in the near future... don’t think they could ‘get their act together’ to do it.
... former UK countries could do it maybe and become a global powerhouse.
Including the USA if we did it while we are still mostly anglican in terms of our language and culture.
Imagine USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand... as one country.

Geographically this would make sense... culturally it could work if we could reduce Mexican (and US?) corruption.KoolBak wrote:Canada, USA and Mexico! Just IMAGINE all the happy hosers and Nyetzkee!

Waiting for the new zealanders to reply to your suggestion of buddying up with ozzland
Just for fun, let's suggest Finland, Sweden and Norway. I'd LOVE to hear my Norse friends opine about marrying the swedes. You know they have a giant joke culture totally hosing each other? Funny as hell....

I know technically China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan aren’t separate but they will merge. The koreas willl merge after WWIII and the Ottoman Empire will emerge like the Phoenix.

Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
All mountainous (resources like metals and water), contiguous and Muslim. All have many things holding them back so some change would likely be better.

Close, but I'm thinking Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Tadjikistan would be a closer match.HitRed wrote:Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

I think the mostly rural and agricultural population of Afghanistan would be overwhelmed by the mostly urban and industrial (and much larger) population of Pakistan. Neither of those overwhelmingly Sunni countries would gel well with Shiite Iran.

Central America would be a great tourism play or have bigger purchasing power by going back to the past. The Federal Republic of Central America lasted from 1823 to 1841. Today all are poor but are in beautiful settings. Remove the corruption and things might take off.
The republic consisted of the present-day Central American countries of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

Northern Ireland to leave the UK and merge with the Republic of Ireland. It was probably going to happen anyway, but Brexit has brought the timeline forward a bit.
We all eagerly await the day that Taiwan is finally reunited with the mainland.
China is already sovereign over Hong Kong (and has been since 1997). If you mean when will Hong Kong lose its status as a special administrative region and cease to have a higher degree of autonomy than other Chinese cities, that will happen in 2047.alex951 wrote:I know technically China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan aren’t separate but they will merge.

Israel, Palestine and Gaza would be an interesting mix
The most boring is the benelux countries.
I'd like to see the UK become closer to USA and Australia but leave Canada out the equation.

I don't see this happening in the near future. Your examples are all European centric which reached its peak in the "European Union." Outside of Europe there is little desire to go through all the necessary work. Regional differences are far greater than in Europe.HitRed wrote:Under one government. Countries to be absorbed by larger countries, on the other hand will continue to be common as long as the Empire of China has enough power.
A US/Canada/Medico merger is not possible at this time. The Mexican constitution is far too xenophobic to be tolerated by the left in the United States. (Seriously, it makes Trump look like a liberal.)

Right on cue, Sinn Fein - a political party that run in both RoI and Northern Irish elections on a platform of Irish reunification - have stormed national elections in the Republic of Ireland:mrswdk wrote:Northern Ireland to leave the UK and merge with the Republic of Ireland. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-51448739The date 10 February now represents two equally important moments for Mary Lou McDonald.
In 2018, it marked the day she took over from Gerry Adams as Sinn Féin president.
Two years later, it marked the beginning of a new era for the party under her leadership, as it consolidated its best-ever election result.
We now know Sinn Féin topped the poll in the majority of constituencies and increased its number of seats by 14 - a remarkable result.
