Imagine being Blind in a Silent Electric Car world
Blind people in society rely on their other senses.. mainly sound, in order to be able to move within society ..
with the new silent genre of vehicles being released, this will potentially cause a massive strain and fear within the Blind community.
would they make an invisible car no one could see..?
like say... a car that drives at night without headlights......
that is basically what they are doing to the Blind community..
try this. go stand on a sidewalk close you eyes and listen to vehicles driving by.. then try to guesstimate when would be the best time to cross the street with your eyes closed...

Does NoProblem think that blind people edge their way slowly across busy roads, working out exactly where they need to stand by listening the chorus of sounds that surrounds them?

I believe Japan has already required a noise system for electric cars. It might be ironic that future "electric" cars might be noisier than some modern gas engines at pedestrian speeds.NomadPatriot wrote:Blind people in society rely on their other senses.. mainly sound, in order to be able to move within society ..
In addition, by the time this happens, most cars will automatically stop on their own.

It paints a pretty picture.. guy sees a cow up ahead, jumps up and starts feverishly stripping down his car and hiding the pieces behind a bush.
Almost a Benny Hill episode!

New law to tackle electric cars’ silent menace to pedestrians
Research shows electric cars are about 40% more likely to hit a pedestrian than a conventional vehicle. One study suggests that 93% of blind and partially sighted people have had problems with them. “It is a really important issue,” said White. “Guide dogs are all about giving people confidence and independence and a near miss or an incident with a vehicle of this type could really set people back a long way.”
In Japan there was a national outcry when a guide dog and its owner were killed by a reversing non-electric vehicle whose driver had used a pause control to deactivate its sound emitter.
The new standards, which in Europe will be introduced via an EU directive, will require activation by default when the vehicle is on.
About 140,000 electric vehicles are now registered in Britain compared with just 3,500 in 2013. By 2030 the National Grid predicts there could be as many as 9 million electric vehicles on Britain’s roads.

Benny Hill stayed in reruns well into the 80's, maybe even the 90's.NomadPatriot wrote:good gosh.. you just referenced Benny Hill.. a 1960's tv series...Dukasaur wrote:

Re: Imagine being Blind in a Silent Electric Car world
Not for nothing, but the sound of cars is helpful to bike riders.
It’s also helpful to me on some of the roads in my neighborhood which have no sidewalks.
When I am walking the dog I use the car sounds to determine if I should let her run ahead on the leash or reel her closer.

Does no one understand that tires and brakes make noise. I hear a truck's tires well before its engine on the highway. And if they have mud tires from literally miles away.
The simple solution: mud tires on electrics. I will need a consultation fee from whomever is implementing this.

well since pedestrians are not legally allowed to walk down the side of a highway, your point seems mute...hotfire wrote:Does no one understand that tires and brakes make noise. I hear a truck's tires well before its engine on the highway. And if they have mud tires from literally miles away.

pretty sure the general subject matter here involves Urban & Suburban streets that have sidewalks with smooth roads, vehicles with regular tires & well maintained braking systems that don't screech.. ..
but I am sure your blind neighbor is thankful your muddin' '98 Durango scratches itself to a slow crawl as it drives over the speed bumps in your trailer park next to the sex toy shop/ mcdonald's off highway 44 ….

MUTE, STANDING MUTE, practice, crim. law. When a prisoner upon his arraignment totally refuses to answer, insists upon mere frivolous pretences, or refuses to put himself upon the country, after pleading not guilty, he is said to stand mute.
