after reading the last 2 pages, it looks like a thread where quirk post bananas every week and keeps us updated about his family and the scores of what appears to be college american football or something. I still don't understand how college sports can be such a big thing for americans, it seems like sometimes it's more popular than pro sports. Is it just a way to still feel a connection with the university you went to?

Fans of college (American) Football is about the college one attended and/or Likes. It is also about REGIONAL Pride, for areas that lack Pro Teams. One does not see a pro team near Boise, Idaho, BUT Boise State is a big draw for fans in that part of the USA.

The same is true for my school, Virginia Tech. There are NOT too many pro teams near that part of the USA, so UT and VT and WVU are BIG for fans in that part of the country. And colleges and university offers many sports, for those interested: Basketball (Men and Women's), Tennis, Lacrosse, wrestling, baseball and softball, swimming, and so much more) so that draws a bit of attetnion, too. Even soccer...! Men's and Women's.
