Now I know better. In the 1950s, most people could get by on one good full-time job, with benefits and a pension. Today, most of those jobs have been eliminated, and replaced with part-time and casual jobs, doing the same things but for less money and with no benefits and no pension. Fewer and fewer people live on a full-time job, and most have to work several part-time jobs to survive. Someone who works three part-time jobs at 26 hours each is working a staggering 78 hours a week, not counting the travel time to shuttle around between all those jobs.
You don't see it, KB, because you're self-employed and largely self-protected, but for those of us in the workplace, who every year face renewed demands to do more work for less money, it's pretty easy to see that the bosses will not be satisfied until the working man spends every waking hour at work and gets paid no more than his basic room and board. In other words, the restoration of slavery. It might masquerade as a rights-respecting ideology, but the only right it really respects is the right to get back on the treadmill and work yourself closer to the grave.
