Good morning Conquer Madness teams! It's coming down to the wire with only 35 games remaining. All round 3 games have finished so only round 4 remains.
Here are today's seeding updates:
#1 & #2 Seed-Ohio State still has a 10 point lead over Maryland. Based on territory counts in Maryland's two remaining game, they will split with TCU, which would give them a 20 point edge over Ohio State. However, Ohio State is locked in a 4 game battle with Pitt. Three games are still to be decided, but one doubles game is pretty well in hand for Ohio State, which would tie them with Maryland for points. I believe the edge would then go to Ohio State with a better win percentage and if Ohio State wins two or more of their remaining games, they will lock up the #1 seed, leaving Maryland in #2.
#3-#5 Seeds-Oregon and Kentucky are still fighting for the top spot in the Doodle Earth Conference and have a strong lead in both of their remaining games. Oregon has one of their remaining games pretty well tied up which will give them the cushion they need to hold off Kentucky, leaving Kentucky in the #5 spot. In the Feudal War conference, South Carolina is looking to win at least two of their remaining games giving them a slight edge over Oregon for the #3 seed. The battle for 3 & 4 will come down to the last few games!
#6-#12-There is a big log jam here from 6-12 and this is where we could see the most change as the last few games finish up. Michigan State only has one game remaining so they will finish no higher than the 6 spot. They should be able to hold off UNLV in conference so they are locked into somewhere between 6-8. Illinois has a bunch of games remaining to finish so they could move up within the 2 seeds to either 5 or 6 and while Duke has fewer games left, they too could move up a spot or two once all is said and done. With one more win, UNLV, Pitt, or Kansas will move ahead of Notre Dame who cannot move up as they are already done with all games. Unfortunately for the Irish, they can only drop at this point. (Kind of feels like real life football this past season since they don't have a conference championship game, but we're talking basketball here so...nevermind)
Out of the dance-While technically still in play by the math, Syracuse is at a huge territory disadvantage in two our of three remaining games, meaning they are out of the tournament. N.C. State still has 8 games remaining and based on current territory counts, stands a decent chance of winning at least 90-110 points with those games. Whether or not that will be enough to push past Princeton in conference and others like Grand Valley or TCU at large, remains to be seen. Missouri and Princeton may also win a few of their remaining games, but may not be enough to jump the other teams in the 13-16 seed range.
Stay tuned for more tomorrow as more games wrap up and the tournament picture becomes clearer.
