#1 in the "Help Me Learn..." series: Even after all these years, there are still a dozen maps that I haven't cross-mapped. There will be 12 tournaments in the series, one for each of these maps. In each tournament, you will attempt to teach me one map. This first one is for Classic Cities Sydney.
These are the maps I have not yet cross-mapped. There are a couple, like Krazy Kingdoms and Temple of Jinn, that I haven't really given a chance. There's others, like 1982, that I've tried over and over and over again but just can't figure out a winning strategy for. There's a few like WWII Eastern Front that I seem to understand but just seem to always have bad luck on. And then of course there's the vile mostrosity Hive, where just looking at the fucking thing is like driving a railroad spike between my eyes.
Just to be clear: each of the maps will be a separate tournament. THIS tournament is only for Sydney.
Eligibility: To play in this tournament, you must be Premium, and must MapRank positive on this map.
The current patched version of MapRank can be found HERE. It works for me both with Firefox and and up-to-date Greasemonkey and with Chrome and an up-to-date Tampermonkey. (Keep in mind, if you want to use it in Game Finder, it must be the olde version of Game Finder, NOT the new one.)
Basic Games Procedure: 16 players will take turns teaching me the map in question. I will launch only one game at a time, and I expect it to be about 2 months to launch all 16 games. In each game, one player will be the Teacher, who will partner with me and attempt to explain the map to me. The Teacher will choose the settings. (No speed, no freestyle, and there must be a round limit. Other than that pretty much anything goes.) Two players will be randomly chosen to be the opponents. It's a limited random -- nobody will get their second game until everybody has had their first, and nobody will get their third until everybody has had their second. Thus, you will play a total of three games in the regular season, one as Teacher and two as Opponent.
I will be present in all the regular games, but I will NOT score and I am NOT eligible to win the tournament.
Finals: Once all the regular games are done, the top four players will advance to the Finals. The top will be decided by:
Total wins
Wins as Teacher
Solo wins (where you manage to pull out a win even though your partner has been killed)
Fastest wins (sum of rounds of all games where you won.)
Precedence (first to sign up.)
The top four players will play six games (every combination of four players possible) and for each pair of games I will ask the partners to jointly choose the settings.
Epiphany Points: If at any point when you are the Teacher you say something that makes me see things in a new way or understand something I didn't understand before, you will get an Epiphany Point. Epiphany points have absolutely nothing to do with winning the tournament. However, I will total them over the 12 tournaments in the series, and the player with the most Epiphany Points after all 12 tournaments will win a prize, probably 1 year of premium. Perhaps I'll get a GA approved for that also. After I see how the first tournament goes I'll give this more thought.
