I know classic was obviously #1, but what were the next 9?

This is the kind of question you can look up on the Map Statistics page.
https://www.conquerclub.com/public.php?mode=maps

You can click on any of the top categories (Title Status Image Released Territories Advanced Gameplay New Recruits Games Played Games Per Month) to sort the list by that category.

Sorting by release date, we get:
https://www.conquerclub.com/public.php?mode=maps&sort=ReleaseDate
Ignoring the 2015 World Cup at the top (which is just a programming error) we find the first nine were:
Classic
Far East
Middle East
Brazil
Canada
Europe
British Isles
Crossword
USA

After that there were three (Africa, Discworld, Indochina) all released on the same day, which would therefore all be tied for tenth place.

Nope, Doodle Earth was 45th, on August 8th, 2007.

Yeah, I used to do quite a bit of archive prowling. Some fascinating stuff. Sadly, I don't have the kind of free time that I used to.

What you will also find from the statistics is that the most popular maps in terms of games played are the old ones. It is not until you get to the 20th most popular map, Baltic Crusades, that you find a map created after 2009 in the top ranking.

20 Baltic Crusades Live 2012-12-16 59 Yes No 102,425 2,238

Classic is of course the most popular having close to 4 million of the over 14 million played, roughly 30%. Then the next 6 most popular maps, ranging from Arms Race at over 300,000 games played to Doodle Earth at almost 800,000 games played ,together account for aver 3 million of the over 14 million played. so the top 7 most popular maps on CC, all created before 2009, account for over 1/2 of the over 14 million games played.

I have been inching towards my platinum cross map medal & it got me thinking.

I had assumed the site had been around for a decade when I joined in 2007 as it was crazy busy at the time.

The monthly games total is good to know but can be misleading of judging by "popularity". Some maps are very quick (doodle) and can be played 25 times at once, where are other bigger larger maps might be just as "popular" but don't get played as often because they are more time consuming. (Hive etc, tho not give cuz some hate it but you get the example)

The Map Stats page has errors. USA, Classic and Asia were all released day 1. It can't be trusted. I built my own list a long time ago and PMed it to Dukasaur. I doubt he has it.

No, I don't. I still have your list of maps from when we were finishing our Cross-map medals, and I also still have your idea for a map based on the human body, but the one about the original maps I don't have.

The reason I didn't keep it is that there was no context. Originally you said you wanted to build a tournament series around it, then you decided not to, and since I didn't intend to run a tournament series like that, I didn't keep it. Now, however, there is a context. There wasn't a maps database back then, but now there is, so if you made a list of the errors in it they could be fixed.

It should be noted that half of those first ten maps - including Classic - have been redone since their release date and resemble the originals in gameplay only.

You should not use the total game played to consider which map is the most popular, since obviously a map created in 2015, even if very popular, have less game played than a map created in 2007.
You should consider, as you did after, the games per month, in which case Baltic Crusades become ranked number 8.

Total of games played is also affected by the number of players, in the first years of the site we had more players, and less maps.
It is an interesting stat but it doesn't tell you which maps are popular imo.

Fewnix wrote:Classic is of course the most popular having close to 4 million of the over 14 million played, roughly 30%. You should also consider the influence of speed games in those statistic.
For example :
Doodle earth -768,780 games played with 460,420 speed games and 308,360 - 24h gmes .
World 2.1 - 456,941 games played with 31,815 speed games and 423,839 - 24h games.

Also speaking about Baltic Crusade :
Baltic Crusade : 102,560games played with 68,216 speed games ( among those 57,440 trench speed games, just for the people that think that trench speed isn't popular) and 34,052 - 24h games
Eurasia 31,344 games played, only 2,556 seed games, and thus 28,538 - 24h games.

Eurasia and Baltic crusade are both from 2012, therefore if we don't take into account speed games, both maps are almost as popular as each other.
World 2.1 is actually more popular than doodle earth without the speed games.

Speed games should be taken into account differently, imho, because size of the map has a strong influence on the choice, and also because 1 speed players can play way more games than one 24h game players, which mean a "speed map" could have more games played with actually less people liking the map.
Would be nice to know how many different players played the map more than 5 times for example, would be really a good indication of popularity.

Really need to adjust the games per month by the # of users on the site at the time. It's the only way to get a truly subjective ranking. I say subjective because Classic is the worst map but will still probably #1, so any ranking that has it in the top 10 is faulty.

why is it so hard to understand that people flock to that map, because it so closely resembles the original reason we all came here? don't knock it... it is the reason for the site... respect your past, come on... the black jesus has spoken...-Bj
