No it wasn't a trick question. I'm probably just getting old. I probably know nothing of how 14-year-olds from Wales or anywhere in the UK talk. I am now depressed.megarman1 wrote:well im 14 from newport thats hows wes talks

if it took us 300 years to work out that the big bendy hurty welsh things were longbows we deserved to get our arses kickedIliad wrote:I know Wales, cause I read a book about Robin Hood set in Wales: the author researched Robin hood and thought that he might have been Anglicized, but was actually Welsh. Also it had heaps of information about Wales.
The reason it took England nearly 300 years was because Wales had the longbow, which was very dangerous at the time, and because they used their abundant forest to fight a guerrilla war. But apart from that I don't know much about Wales. It just kinda gets overshadowed.

Errm... Original poster was not 100% correct. Forgive me for a little (semi) professional scorn, but a book about Robin Hood is not exactly the best place to start on medieval Wales...heavycola wrote:if it took us 300 years to work out that the big bendy hurty welsh things were longbows we deserved to get our arses kickedIliad wrote:I know Wales, cause I read a book about Robin Hood set in Wales: the author researched Robin hood and thought that he might have been Anglicized, but was actually Welsh. He was found liable for the murder by a civil court. Anyway he was guiltier than a puppy sitting next to a pile of poo.Stopper wrote:Correct. But you are essentially correct. The guerilla warfare was certainly an issue, not just because of the terrain but also because of the makeup of Welsh forces, which was usually based around smaller clan/tribal type groups rather than feudal armies. As for weapons, the medieval Welsh actually primarily used both javelins and shorter bows, made of elm not yew, because they were more effective and powerful at short range. The bows were, however, pretty shitty in open battle, and Welsh forces nearly always suffered heavy defeats when fighting out of cover. The Welsh Longbow was a brilliant weapon, and contributed to many astounding victories, but it was made for long-range accuracy rather than short range armour-piercing power.
Ultimately, however, the reason Wales held out for so long is perhaps an indication that the Norman lords did not see it as a prize worth ploughing everything into. It was certainly a thorn in the side of the English, but not too important in the scale of things.

Dammit. It definitely used to work. Here's a photo gallery of him and his associates instead - use that for what you will, but for God's sake don't look straight into his eyes. (Or indeed, listen to any of his music.)heavycola wrote:Stopper the link in your sig isn't working. My Daniel O'Donnell needs remain unmet, and i'd like to know what you plan to do about it.
Totally agree. Every world cup that comes along it's all about how England are going to win it when they don't really have much of a chance. They've been humbled that many times (Northern Ireland 1 England 0Phobia wrote:I tell you one thing England is over rated at - Sport. Such as football, rugby, cricket....

Wales didn't exist before 1535 (ish, can't remember exactly) & the act of union. It was a collection of smaller countries; Gwynedd, Powys, Clwyd, Ceredigion, Dyfed, ... can't remember what the other two were all called off the top of my head but they were where Brecknockshire & Glamorgan are currently.Guiscard wrote:But you are essentially correct.
