-- The Battle for the Cape
Brought to you by Team CC
This tournament is part of Batch 2 of the SOS Africa qualifiers. Remember that you can sign up for only one tournament per batch, so if you sign up for this tourney, you cannot join ManBungalow's African Nuclear Singles, TeeGee's MADagascar Trips, or mcshanester29's Let's Terminate Rorke. If you attempt to join more than one Batch 2 tournament, you will be required to choose one.
Of course, if you signed up for a Batch 1 qualifier, you may still sign up for this or any other Batch 2 qualifier.
After capturing Capetown in 1795, the British slowly but surely increased their control of the Cape region and the lands now known as South Africa. In a long series of wars they first crushed the independence of the Xhosa, then the Zulu, and finally the Boers.
By the time the Treaty of Berlin was signed in 1885, the British had effective overlordship of all of what is now South Africa. The Treaty of Berlin, although primarily concerned with central Africa, was the death blow to the autonomy of Africans everywhere. Prior to the Treaty, European colonial powers were content with governing the major port cities and extending only nominal suzerainty over the interior. The Treaty of Berlin, however, established the "Principle of Effectivity" under which colonial powers had to prove that they were meddling in the affairs of locals to a sufficient degree to call themselves the government. Within 20 years, all remaining African tribes were subjugated, and the Second Boer War crushed the last independent Europeans.
Our South Africa 1885 map presents the situation in the Cape Region as it existed on the eve of the Treaty of Berlin, and in this tournament you will have plenty of time to ponder Man's inhumanity to Man as you ruthlessly hunt down and slaughter your opponents.

Round Length: 24 Hour
Round Limit: 20 rounds
Setup
We are looking for 40 players, but any multiple of 5 from 20 to 60 can be accommodated if this fills faster or slower than expected.
You will play 5-player standard games on the map specified. All the games will have a 20 round limit, but you will be rewarded for bold and aggressive play by scoring more points for games that you win without going to the round limit. All games will be randomly and independently seeded.
Structure
Primary Phase: You will play in four games. There will be 5 points awarded to the winner of a game that is won by round limit, 2 extra points (therefore 7 total) if the game is won on Round 20 before the Round limit is reached, and 1 extra point for each round before that. Thus, for instance, if you hustle and win the game on Round 14 you will score 13 points because (7 + {20-14}) = 13.
If the game goes to the round limit, there will be 1 point awarded to each of the surviving non-winners.
Secondary Phase: Players will advance to the Secondary Phase by the following rules:
- All players who won at least one game in the Primary will advance.
- If there are any players who did not win a game but got at least one round limit survival point, then at least one of those players will also advance.
- If the players satisfying condition 2a have differing numbers of survival points, all those who taken as a class have the most survival points will advance. For example, if some non-winning players have 3 points, some have 2, and some have 1, then all those who have 3 are guaranteed to advance.
- If 2b is the case and the number of players advancing as a result of 1 and 2b is not a multiple of 5, then players will be advanced from among non-winning players who have fewer points than the maximum, in order to make up games of 5.
- If adding the players in the next point class also does not result in a multiple of 5, then players from that class will be drawn by lot to advance.
- If there are no players satisfying 2a (meaning that all players either won a game or lost without reaching the round limit) and the number of winning players is not a multiple of 5, then non-winning players from the Primary Phase will be drawn by by lot to advance, in such number as to make the total a multiple of 5.
In the Secondary Phase, you will play three games with the same settings and rules as in the Primary Phase. Points will not reset; Primary and Secondary Phase points will be cumulative. HOWEVER, points in the Secondary Phase will be doubled (so, winning by round limit will score 10 points instead of 5, and the example given of a player winning in Round 14 would score 26 points instead of 13) There will be plenty of opportunity, therefore, to overcome a bad start in the final stretch.
The player with the most points when all is said and done will win the tournament.
Prizes
The winner of the tournament will receive 3 months Premium membership. He/she will also be rewarded with a General Achievement Medal and a place in the SOS Africa Finals to be played on Africa II. Prizes are donated by Entertainment team.
