That's okay. It's an honest mistake.

Being offended is an emotional reaction to an external stimuli. There is no such thing as something being offensive. It's all about how you react and respond to something. For Example: Nudity isn't offensive, because nothing can be offensive. Some prudes are offended when they see nudity. Some people are not offended when they see nudity.

Racism on the other hand is the belief that members of a certain race share certain attributes which make that group as a whole less desirable, more desirable, inferior, or superior. Your statement is definitely racist, as you state that a group as a whole has less desirable traits.

Now, do I find the statement offensive? No, because I don't let silly things get my panties in a wad. I know it's not true, and has no validity.

I believe that studies have shown that, on average, black people do less well at school than white.
However, before the supremacists get carried away, white people do less well than Asian.
I haven't seen any data relating to Polynesians or Orientals - perhaps the comparable samples are too small.
It is only an inference that this is due to laziness and stupidity, not a causal relationship.

I take the view that offence is taken rather than given: similar to verbal (or cyber) bullying.

If someone calls you a name, you have a choice of how to respond:
a) They're wrong, and you know they are; so it's water off a duck's back, and can be ignored
b) they're right, but you're happy with the way you are, so no need to worry
c) they're right, and you want to change, so take it as the inspiration.

It's poor people who require public assistance,
such as welfare etc. Race is not the factor.

People who apply themselves tend to do better in school
and in the workplace. There are other factors involved
here as well and still race isn't the determining factor.

This thread is simply dumb and the stereotypes some people
feel encouraged here are ignorant.

Personally, I am very rarely offended, and certainly not by things like racism, strong language or nudity. In that sense, nothing is offensive, things can only be perceived as offensive by certain people.
Normally, however, when using the term offensive, people mean 'something that a lot of people would be offended by'. If we are using that as our definition then the statement about blacks is definitely offensive.
