Why do players who finish 2nd sometimes lose more points than players who finish 3rd or 4th?

At the end of each game, the winner takes points away from each loser. The points to be awarded is calculated as (loser's score / winner's score) * 20, up to a maximum of 100 points from each opponent.

As you can see, the amount of points won or lost has nothing to do with how long a player survives in a game. It is determined solely by the score of the winner and each loser.
